Chapter One - Connections

An existence is held down by a web, strong and sturdy, interconnecting it with others around. When one is affected, the others feel it…whether that one person is aware of it or not.

Things had never been smooth, but it was always period after period of challenges and difficulties, each ending with some kind of reward of patience; strength, knowledge, experience.

That thought alone kept one going. No matter how long the drought, rain would fall sooner or later…no matter how heavy the storm…the skies will clear. It was all a cycle after all, the earth needed to shed and chip and grow and mature. It was all part of existing.

And the web, the bonds that held these existences together waver and tremble under the weight of this cycle, unknowingly becoming each other’s strength if they willed to protect these connections.

That’s how it was supposed to be, their connections. Years of companionship would mean nothing if their bonds weren’t this strong. Each was an important existent for the other and an external threat naturally brought their defenses up.

The web had wavered, even if Daiki was the one who had first felt the impact, the tension in the room was enough to confirm it.

“He’s not answering his phone,” Kota sighed, leaning against the wall trying to bear the squeeze around his chest.

“Why did we let him go on his own?” Yuya said, voice weak in remorse.

“We got too careless, even after Ryu’s kidnapping…I can’t believe this,” Yuri croaked, burying his face on the table and fisting his hair.

“Maybe, maybe we’re getting too worked up about this…let’s calm down and think positive,” Hikaru pressed seriously. Kei frowned rubbing Daiki’s back to sooth him. The younger was still hyperventilating, shocked eyes upon his bandaged hands.

“Yeah, Ryu, Chii and I will go look for him,” Yuto declared grabbing his jacket. Ryutaro and Yuri nodded in agreement and got to their feet.

“We’ll keep trying to reach him,” Keito added pulling out his phone.

“You’re not leaving this apartment,”

All eyes fell upon the group’s lanky leader, whose own gaze was on the balcony door. Lightening flashed in the distance and it started to rain.

“But…but…,”

“I mean it, nobody leaves this apartment,”

The only sound heard was the rain lashing on all surfaces. They had never seen their leader look so terribly frightening as he did now. His face was focused on the door, eyes distant, and hands clenching and unclenching as if he were trying to rid them of an ache.

They all turned to Hikaru for help, who seemed surprisingly unfazed by his best friend’s mood.

“What are you planning?” he implored, looking innocently curious.

Kota gave him a look. It was hard for the others to understand exactly what it meant but Hikaru seemed to get it just fine.

“Alright everyone, you heard him, get your butts back in the living room!”

Hikaru ignored the protests as he and Kota put on their own jackets and grabbed the one umbrella hanging by the door.

“Keep an eye on each other, and Kei…we’re leaving Daiki to you,” he continued and received a nod from the other.

“We’ll be back soon, if he comes back before us, let us know…and…make sure Sakura doesn’t get a wind of this,” Kota said, emphasizing the last part.

As the door closed, Yuto plopped himself next to Keito on the couch as the boy kept dialing.

“Kei,”

“Yes Dai-chan?”

Kei blinked as Daiki trembled. Yuri took a seat next to him and held his shaking hands.

“Ryosuke, his consciousness…I can’t reach it.”

Aoi Keisuke had always prided himself for having a great sense of calm and quick thinking. Even in the most pressing of situations he could make sense of something that most others would be too shaken to understand.

He believed himself to be experienced enough with people and situations because it showed in him being the head of his team of engineers at work. People relied on him to meet deadlines, impress clients, make last minute changes in their products and even come up with an entirely new gadget in a couple of days.

Sakura had told him that such a firm disposition was a great demand in her work, hearts tended to shake at the prospect of having a life on the line.

He had always advised her to have confidence in herself, because this trait was very much dependent on your confidence. He had chastised her for believing it to be hard to do.

Maybe he should’ve seen her at work once before saying it, because at that moment, as the rain lashed upon every inch of him, a phone ringing somewhere and a limp form lying before him in a pool of blood had every cell in his body in a standstill.

As the boy coughed out blood, he felt his knees give way.

“Any…is there anybody there? We need help! An ambulance! Somebody call an ambulance!”

He crawled closer and cringed at the bullet wound in the boy’s abdomen.

“Hang on, please just…hang on,” he pleaded to the gasping boy and stumbled for his phone. His mind was blank, he cried as he couldn’t remember how to call for an ambulance.

“Your phone’s getting wet,”

He jumped at the horse voice and looked down to find Ryosuke blinking up at him. The rain had slowed to a drizzle.

“My pain’s subsiding, I’m going to be okay,” he added, cringing as he placed pressure on his wound. Aoi panicked, he was losing his sense of pain? His eyes widened as within the pool of blood he spotted something silver.

“The bullet, but…it hit you…I saw it…,” he exclaimed, panicking even more. Did the bullet go all the way through him? The damage…the damage…

“Calm down,” Ryosuke chuckled weakly as Aoi looked at him guiltily. His phone had died a while ago and the ringing had stopped as well.

“I’ll get you on my back, keep your hand on that wound…there’s got to be someone nearby,” Aoi decided getting on his feet and scanning the area beyond the bridge. He could make out the main road.

“Good, just hang on and…,”

Aoi felt a jolt and a shiver run down his spine as he turned around to find Ryosuke on his feet. The boy removed his blood stained hand and stroked the smooth stretch of skin where the injury once was in mild surprise.

“Ha…how…how did that…?” Aoi spluttered staring wide eyed at the shorter figure before him. Ryosuke’s clothes and hands were wet and stained with blood, but other than that he seemed completely fine.

Ryosuke gave him a look of pure irritation.

“I heal real quick, that’s all,” he replied impassively. He rolled his eyes as Aoi collapsed.

“This could be a problem.”
