File 10 - Interview with Kanji Tatsumi

Sep 18, 2009 19:26

Well, that little interview I planned with Kanji today didn't quite turn out how I expected. He really didn't know much regarding Ms. Yamano or Saki Konishi, nor did he notice anything out of the ordinary around the shop before or after Ms. Yamano's murder.

Although... he was certainly acting a bit strangely today, for some reason. More nervous than ( Read more... )

How suspicious.

Kanji-an disappeared all of sudden?

Yes. Yesterday, I asked if he would meet me after school, so we could speak with one another. I decided it would be best to hold our interview somewhere secluded, so we followed the flood plain to the park. Apparently, Yosuke-san and another girl were following us for some reason. Kanji-kun got quiet upset and chased after them. That was the last time I saw him...

I'm worried. This is too similar to the manner in which Yukiko-san disappeared for it to be a coincidence.

Do you think that perhaps he was kidnapped?

She is still missing?

Considering the similarities to the previous case, I would think so.

No, Yukiko-san was recovered quite awhile ago. In fact, she returned home the day before that weird virus struck that made me think I was "Man of Twenty Faces."

Can't say I'd exactly miss having him around but... you think something's up?

Well, yes. It's just a feeling, but...

Kanji's mother says he often disappears like this, but even she has a bad feeling. I can't very well discount a mother's intuition.

Yukiko-san also disappeared during daylight hours. Right at her own home, too. This can't be a coincidence.

Yeah, you're right. But we better give him a day to show up before we start freaking out too much.

I understand.

Though, I would like to question Yosuke Hanamura, as I believe he might know something about all of this. It seems a bit suspicious that he would be following me while I was questioning a potential witness.

I knew that was a bad idea...

Yeah, sorry bout that... "Impeding" my ass.

W-wait! He's missing? Like, missing-missing? Fourth verse, same as the first...

Just what exactly were you trying to accomplish, anyway?

Yes. Kanji's mother put in a call to the police station around 8:00 pm this evening saying that he failed to come home from school. He and I parted ways around 6:45 pm. That means, he disappeared between those two times.

Do have any information that might lead to his whereabouts?

Oh, uh. Just. You know. Stuff...

Yeah, but an insane asylum doesn't sound like the best way to spend my weekend... Sorry. I don't have any idea. I'm sure he'll turn up in a few days. Was he acting really... Un-Kanji-ish earlier by any chance?

...stuff? What sort of "stuff"?

As a matter of fact, yes, he was. When I met him outside the school gates this afternoon, he seemed particularly on edge. Nervous. As we began talking, the feeling that something was a little off about him persisted. So, I asked him straight out why he was acting so odd. At that point, his actions and behavior suddenly changed. He became unnaturally wooden and closed-mouthed. I think it was in reaction to the fact that I called him "odd". This is just a guess on my part, but I think he may have some sort of complex about being thought "odd" or "strange".

((And there's your hint for Teddie!))

...no way, it couldn't be... like what happened with Amagi?

I don't want to jump to conclusions, but... I have a bad feeling about this. Both Yukiko-san and Kanji-kun went missing during daylight hours right in front of their own home. There were also plenty people around, but none of them noticed anyone suspicious...

If he begins posting to the community and his behavior has been drastically altered, then we'll know for sure...

If that's the case, then I hope that this time, we'll know enough about what's going on to be able to help him sooner. I don't want to just leave him where he is.

If I had a clue about who the kidnapper might be and their methods, we might stand a better chance. Unfortunately, no one has seen anything out of the ordinary. It's quite puzzling.

In the meantime, I've been working on a victim profile, in an attempt to predict future targets. If possible, I'd like to protect them before they have a chance to be kidnapped. There has to be some kind of pattern, some common denominator between all the victims.

You said he's gone missing? We were right... Let's just hope it turns out to be nothing.

Yeah, I'll see you there. I'm hoping he won't show up on the Midnight Channel, but I'm not counting on it.

You go ahead and watch the Midnight Channel, I'm going to see about the weather for the next few days. This murderer must be a powerhouse to do that to Kanji of all people.
