'twas a productive weekend, though I still don't feel like I've really gotten much done.
Thursday night drove down to Peoria (the drive seemed faster than usual for some reason), and we spent time watching Scrubs 'till bed.
Friday woke up early and we drove out to the school. Managed to get in, and to my surprise, my superintendent was there (even though they said he wouldn't be.) So we got up to my classroom, and Katie marveled at how large it is, and my superintendent eventually came up too and gave me a key to the classroom, a few packets of course descriptions and handbooks, and a flash drive with lessons and whatnot from the prior teacher. Haven't had a chance to go through that yet. The prior teacher left me a LOT of stuff. Not only drawers of pencils and dry erase markers and scissors, but a few filing cabinets with lesson plans in 'em for different units, and just MOUNTAINS of books.
Just how many books? I took pictures. He left me sets of:
The Yearling, Wuthering Heights, a few collections of plays, The War of the Worlds, The Turn of the Screw, The Witch of Blackbird Pond, A Tale of Two Cities, Sister Carrie, A Separate Peace, various collections of poetry, The Scarlet Letter, Robinson Crusoe, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner (got really excited at that), The Return of the Native, A Raisin in the Sun, Pride and Prejudice, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich, The Old Man and the Sea, Of Mice and Men, Oedipus Rex, The Pearl, A Murder is Announced, Night, Moby Dick, 12 Angry Men, Lord of the Flies, Lord Jim, Little Women, The Odyssey, The Joy Luck Club, Julius Caesar, To Kill a Mockingbird, Jane Eyre, The Hound of the Baskervilles, Harry Potter 1, The Hobbit, The Outnumbered, The House on Mango Street, Macbeth, The Good Earth, The Grapes of Wrath, The Great Gatsby, Gulliver's Travels, Hamlet, For Whom the Bell Tolls, Frankenstein, Fahrenheit 451, Dr. Faustus, Death Be Not Proud, Darkness at Noon, The Catcher in the Rye, The Chosen, The Crucible, Candide, The Bluest Eye, Animal Farm, April Morning, The Bell Jar, The Awakening, The Adventures of Huck Finn, 1984, Antigone
so overwhelming amount of stuff, though I'd rather he left me all this stuff than nothing at all.
Picked through the books to find teacher edition textbooks, and when the heat got to us (no AC in the rooms), we went out to lunch at a place called The Pizza Peel, which is owned by the family of one of katie's students. 'twas delicious. Drove back to Katie's and played with Shyster before we went to Barnes and Noble so Katie could talk with the woman about the nooks issues she's having (for her classroom). I found a book about your first year of teaching that looked promising, so I'll have to see if the library has it (or half.price books). Then went to the apartment in Washington, which was very nice, but a bit higher than I can afford. Ate dinner, and then went back out to go to Michaels and a few goodwills. Got a few little things, and then we got ice cream since it was sooooo hot. Chillaxed with more Scrubs.
Saturday went to visit the place in Peoria (which is literally down the block from Katie. Not even two minutes away). It's NICE. And within my price range. Only problem is, nothing is open yet. The woman said that people are turning in leases this month, so the minute something opens up, she'd call me so I could fax her my application and send the check to reserve the place. I'd really enjoy it there. It's farther from the school than ideal, but it's got a nice open kitchen, room for an actual dining room (instead of just bleeding into the living room), and the bedroom is a good size. Plus the place has two laundry facilities (that operate on a laundry card instead of needing to have quarters), a pool, and a nice workout area and rec room. I really hope something opens up. Until then, I just have to keep looking.
Went to Bradley to pick up mikey (who came down to work at the Bfund, getting it ready for next year), and we walked over to a place called One World, which is delicious and has a nice laid back atmosphere. They apparently feature an artist every month, so the artist comes in and puts up various paintings all over the walls. I thought that was really awesome.
Went back to Katie's place 'cause the heat was getting to me. Took a nap and then headed to Eureka to get fingerprinted. I've been fingerprinted before for education nonsense, but this was the most terrifying fingerprinting experience I've had. It was at the county jail. So I go in and didn't notice the buzzer on the door. Tried to open the door and it was locked until a voice on the intercom asked why I was there and opened the door for me. Go inside, expecting to see said person, only there is NO ONE THERE. I'm looking around and the intercom again comes on and tells me to come over here, so I go over to this window that is so tinted you can barely see through it. There's an intercom on the wall and he tells me to put my money and form on a drawer, which he had slid out from behind the wall. Put it in, he slides it back so he can get it, and I'm standing around feeling like I'm in some kind of 1984 type movie. Finally an actual human came out and took me through the various locked doors so I could get fingerprinted. By the time we were all done, I just wanted to get outta there.
Drove back to bloomington to get gas and something to drink. Drove home and pretty much collapsed. Watched Space Jam, which was excellent as always.
luckily, the heat isn't terrible today. We actually have the windows open!
