Just got the announcement that Alan Smale's "A Clash of Eagles" featured in Panverse Two
won the Sidewise Award for Alternative History in the Short-Form category. Wonderful news for Alan and also for this wonderful anthology series that seems to be stacking creds like
racks on racks on racks.
In other news,
the Crime Writers Association Dagger shortlists have been announced. I haven't been following with the avid interest of previous years, but I've heard good things about a few of the Gold Dagger nominees, namely Snowdrops, which was also shortlisted for the Man Booker, and Before I Go To Sleep, which seems to me an earnest riff on the Memento premise. The Guardian
thinks there might be gender bias afoot.
And
matociquala solicits from the congregation a hearty AMEN.
Finding out the author of The Count of Monte Cristo (my hands-down favorite book growing up) was BLM* changed my life. It did more to legitimize my passion for writing than the encouragement of a thousand and one English teachers. It also revealed to me that I wasn't hamstringing myself if I didn't want everything I wrote to be about the Black Experience in America.
Thank you, Monsieur Dumas.
