Today is Jose's birthday. His sister and her family are here visiting, and the family went up to the mountains on this gorgeous sunny and warm late spring afternoon. While they were securely out of town, I just sneaked into Jose's house (with the key, mind you), and filled the living room and dining room with helium balloons, regular balloons, crepe paper twisty streamers, and a couple of Happy Birthday signs. Yay! I'm expecting them to come home int he next two hours, and I can't wait for Jose's surprise! I hope this makes him feel loved and appreciated on his birthday!
Got a little news for you on the front from Ian's job. He went into LEGO yesterday and spoke with a hiring manager in Design. They're dreadfully swamped, and he desperately wants to hire more people, and he's very interested in Ian and another laid-off friend of ours from the Guildhall. The good news (for us) is that one of the designers has just given his notice, and that job will certainly be back-filled, so there will be one job opening soon. Yay! The less great news is that the hiring manager is in a struggle with the corporate bosses over budget and how many people he can hire. It may be longer (months?) before more than the one job opens up. We interpret this largely as much stronger light at the end of the tunnel, even if not the best news humanly imaginable from LEGO.
The current plan is to hold out for a re-hire there until the end of August. That's 6 months since Ian was laid-off, and we both agree that is the end of hope on getting rehired immediately, and at that point it's time to move on at least temporarily to another job type.
Our lease expires in a couple weeks, and we've decided to renew probably through the end of October, just a short lease. We hope to work out the job situation during that time, save some more money, and buy a house.
As I write this, there are happy cats sitting in the sill of the open (but screened) window next to me, basking in the sun, and keeping a lookout for the dreaded "Ek-eks" (what you may know as "birds").
We went out last night with a group of 9 to see "X-Men: First Class." \m/ AWESOME!!! \m/ I've decided this is my #5 favorite superhero movie ever. I just love so much about it -- the casting was great across the board, the acting was taken seriously, the special effects were well done, the presentation of a period setting in the early 60s was handled nicely with touches like subtle but consistent hints of the sexism of the times everywhere, the story had the usual superhero character history angst but also focused on the larger issues of why people choose to make heroes of themselves. Even silly bits like the origins of the yellow and black suits and the kind silly name "X-Men" were treated with subtlety and respect. I will definitely see this a second time in the theatre, and I look forward to watching it again. Do yourself a favor, get a babysitter, and go see this!
