Sangamon is taken from a little over a month after the end of Zodiac. I've placed that arbitrarily but precisely at September 22nd, 1988, in this comment. (The 22nd was the one that was Thursday.) His world is roughly ours, with a few minor additions -- companies, politicians, that parallel but are not identical to ours.
