Summary: Written for the prompt "Five times Kurt defended his friends, and once they defended him."
A/N: I've been laid up in recovery mode after a surgery, so I figured I might as well finish up some fics I had laying around. Not great, as I'm pretty rusty.
Tina
Kurt reacts badly when Artie makes yet another snide comment at Tina. He isn’t sure what has crawled up Artie’s butt recently, but how he was treating Tina wasn’t ok and he was sick of seeing Tina just take it. Artie is getting harsher and harsher with his criticisms and comments. Kurt steps up beside Tina, drawing her attention to him.
“Tina, Artie.” He greeted. She smiled hesitantly and Artie glances at him, a glower on his face.
“She’s been faking her stutter.” Artie blurts out and Tina freezes. “She’s lied to all of us, over something that stupid! I thought we had a connection, but she was faking it the whole time!”
“Why wouldn’t you still have a connection?” Kurt questions, surprised.
“I thought we both had challenges, me being in this chair and her stutter. The connection we had wasn’t real.”
“That’s not a connection.” Kurt blurts out before he can stop himself. Artie stares at him for a second.
“The point being she’s a liar!” Artie snarls, shooting Tina the most horrible look. Kurt glances at Tina and she just looks devastated, and Kurt thinks this has gone on far enough.
“Ok, I get being upset, but do you plan on punishing her forever? Going to brand her with a scarlet letter? You’re taking it too far by trying to humiliate her.”
“This doesn’t really concern you, Kurt.” He finally said coldly.
“Well, since you’re making snide comments so much, and making Glee Club kind of unbearable for everyone with this, you’re making it everyone’s concern.” Kurt snapped back.
“What she did-”
“Is her business.” Kurt cut in coldly. “She trusted you enough to come clean and you’re taking any opportunity to throw it in her face. She had a reason, you might not understand or agree with it, but you don’t have the right to try and punish her for it either.” Tina’s staring at him wide-eyed and Artie’s face gets red.
“Whatever, I’ve got better things to do.” Artie snarled, wheeling himself away. Tina tentatively puts her hand on Kurt’s arm.
“Thank you.” She says softly and Kurt gives her a small smile.
“Well, he was acting like a jerk and it didn’t seem like anyone else was going to say anything. You did what you did, dwelling on it and being angry about it isn’t going to change it.” Kurt said and when Tina slips her arm through his, he simply leads her towards the choir room.
Santana
“Get off me!” Kurt’s halfway out of the locker room when he hears Santana’s voice.
“Hold still you stupid slut!” Kurt doesn’t know the voice, but when Santana makes a noise of pain, he hurries around the corner and finds some jock trying to shove Santana up against a locker pawing at her.
“What the hell are you doing?” Kurt demands and the guy barely glances at him.
“Fuck off fag.” He snarls, as he yanks at Santana’s clothing.
“She told you to stop.” Kurt snapped.
“What you wanna watch or something?” The jock snarled, and Kurt clenches his fist.
“Let her go!” He demanded again, and Santana keeps her eyes on him, there’s something in her eyes that makes Kurt’s chest hurt. Kurt isn’t about to let this happen, and while he might not be particularly threatening, he knows someone who is. He glanced behind his shoulder.
“Coach Sylvester!” He calls loudly and the coaches angry voice bellowed from somewhere down the hall, the jock panics and takes off, shoving Santana forward. She pushed away from the lockers he’d pushed her up against and turned towards Kurt, her clothing slightly torn and her eyes red-rimmed, but without tears. She attempts to straighten her clothes and Kurt frowns. He knows that he can’t just hurry over and try and help her like he would with some of the others, so he opens his bag and pulls out a comb.
“Let me fix your hair,” Kurt says, holding out the comb. Santana knows what he’s doing, but she’d be lying if she didn’t admit she needed some sort of comfort. She lets him comb her hair.
“Thank you.” She says, trying to pass it off like she’s thanking him for fixing her hair.
“Of course,” Kurt says, as he pulls her hair back.
They never speak of it again, and Santana never makes any indication that she’s affected by it, but Kurt keeps a better eye on her from then on.
Rachel
Kurt half listens to the argument Finn and Rachel are having. He really isn’t listening to all of it, just keywords he picks up on. Something about Jesse getting a part and Finn thinking he should have gotten it and Rachel disagreeing. Then Finn calls Rachel a bitch, and Kurt whips around because that isn’t ok.
“What did you just say to her?” Kurt’s voice is dangerous and Finn blinks stupidly.
“I said she was a bitch!” Finn snapped.
“Because she’s being honest with you?” Kurt demanded and Rachel moves the slightest bit behind him. “She’s right, this part isn’t right for you.”
“And it’s right for Jesse?” Finn demanded.
“Well, I don’t actually agree with that either,” Kurt said with a shrug. “Puck would probably be better suited for the part in all honesty. Mr. Shue however, has picked Jesse for this particular song.”
“She just wants a chance to sing with Jesse.” Finn protested.
“And?” Kurt asked impatiently and Finn looked at him betrayed. “You aren’t together Finn. You two were, you broke up, and she’s moved on. What do you think that you’re the only one who’s supposed to move on? Is Rachel supposed to just watch you from a distance with a forlorn look on her face forever?”
“You don’t even like her!” Finn protested.
“My feelings about Rachel have nothing to do with the fact that you’re being cruel! She did nothing to deserve you calling her a bitch. All she did was disagree and you’re acting terribly.” Finn glares, and Kurt meets his glare head on.
“Whatever, I’m out of here.” Finn finally snarls, throwing his arms up and stalking out of the room.
“Thank you, Kurt,” Rachel says softly from behind him. He turns to look at her, giving her a measured look.
“You aren’t a bitch. Highly annoying at times, but not a bitch.” She smiled tentatively and offers the sheet music she’s holding.
“Would you help me rehearse?” Kurt isn’t stupid, he knows she isn’t really looking for a rehearsal buddy, more likely she just still needs someone near.
“Sure.” He agrees, because yeah, while Rachel wasn’t his favorite person, she didn’t deserve the scorn Finn was showing her.
Puck
Kurt doesn’t hate Puck. Not really, sure they aren’t exactly friends, but Puck hasn’t thrown him in the trash in a long time and he actually stopped a few others from doing it. So when he hears Karofsky make some comments about Puck’s stint in juvie and asked if he was someone’s bitch, he see’s Puck puff up and not really wanting to see the other boy go back to juvie for pounding Karofsky into the ground, Kurt lets out a loud snort.
“Everyone knows Puck probably ran that place. If there was, as you so crudely put it, a bitch, I imagine Puck had his pick of them.” Kurt says lazily, without actually making eye contact with either boy.
“No one asked you fag!” Karofsky snarls. Puck is eyeing him to see his next move, and Kurt simply takes out a nail file and begins filing his nails.
“You sound disappointed Karofsky. Were you hoping for a hookup?” Kurt asks a little mockingly. Puck laughs full out like it’s the funniest thing he’s ever heard. Karofsky curses under his breath before mumbling he’d get Kurt after class. Honestly, Kurt is a little terrified because Karofsky has been ramping up in the sexual nature of the harassment and he’s quite nervous he will pay for this later.
Puck catches his eye, and Kurt isn’t blind to the appreciative look in his eye. Puck walks him out of class and all the way to glee.
Mercedes
Kurt doesn’t get physical. It’s not that he can’t defend himself so much as the fact that he’s not stupid enough to think he won’t be the one punished if he does. Also, he isn’t all that interested in having the fabulous knocked out of him by some of his tormentors. Still, when he see’s that Jacob Bin Israel kid crowding into Mercedes personal space, he heads in that direction, because Mercedes seems upset.
“Get away from me.” Mercedes snarls and Jacob leans in closer.
“Rumor has it you’re desperate for a boyfriend. I’m offering my services to you.” Jacob leered, his wandering hand blocked by Mercedes book. Kurt has seen all he’s needed to see because no one touches Mercedes without her consent and Kurt reacts before he has time fully think it out. He’s got hold of Jacob’s bag and yanks him hard backwards and into a row of lockers.
“Did you not only just call my girl desperate, but also try to touch without permission?” Kurt asks darkly, and for once, he actually does tower over someone, and Jacob shrinks back from the fury.
“I-I-I Just thought that since Finn threatened to beat me up if I went near Rachel and Mercedes said she wished she had a boyfriend, I could-”
“What, swing your obsessive, pervy thoughts to her?”
They’ve gathered a small crowd now, but Kurt doesn’t care. Jacob shrinks back further. Kurt vaguely hears Santana murmur something about it being kinda hot, but then Coach Beiste is breaking up the group.
“What’s going on here?” She hollers and Mercedes speaks up.
“Jacob was harassing me, Kurt stopped him.” Beiste looks between the two and waves them off.
“Everyone get out of here. You-” she said jabbing a finger at Jacob “Get up, let’s go, we’re going to have a talk.”
Jacob slinks away from the lockers and towards Beiste’s towering form. Mercedes links arms with Kurt.
“Thank you.” She tells him earnestly, and he smiles.
“Of course.” Kurt waves it off, before making shopping plans.
When the defended Kurt
Kurt huddles in the showers, cold, wet, and unable to move. His arms had long since gone numb from being tied over his head. He thinks it’s been at least several hours since he was ambushed He hears a commotion and suddenly, the cold water is cut off. It takes him a moment to register what’s going on.
“Oh my god, Oh my god!” Matt mumbles as he fumbles with the knot on the ropes. “Who did this? Kurt, who did this!?” It’s the most Matt’s ever said to him, and Kurt almost laughs. Instead, he shivers violently.
“Az-Azimio.” He gets out between chattering teeth.
“I need some help!” Matt yells and Kurt flinches as the noise echoes around the room. There’s suddenly noise and movement and Puck fill the doorway.
“What the fuck?!” Puck snarls, dropping to his knees and pulling out a pocket knife to cut the ropes away. “What happened?” Kurt’s arms fall away and he lets out a sound of pain as feeling attempts to flood back into the limbs.
“He said Azimio did it.” Kurt watches dazed as Matt grabs Puck’s arm and yanks him back down when he attempted to stand. “Priorities Puck! There will be time for that, but Kurt’s way too cold. Like possibly hypothermic cold. We need an ambulance.”
Puck nods sharply and pulls out his cell phone. Kurt was so busy watching Puck’s unexpected reaction, he startles when he feels thick towels being wrapped around him. Matt is wrapping him up and Brittany is suddenly there looking at him with huge eyes and Quinn kneels down in front of him and starts a monologue as she rubs a towel through his hair.
“This will help warm you up.” She promised and Brittany suddenly squeezes in on his free side to hug him.
“This always warms me up.” She murmurs in his ear.
Suddenly Mr. Schue is there and so his Coach Sue and she is absolutely furious. Kurt’s suddenly so tired like he just has no more to keep him going.
“Ladyface, hey, come on, eyes open.” Sue is suddenly in his face, and he really tries to obey her. He really does. He feels like his bones have turned to jelly though and he goes into a slide, falling into Matt, who just hangs on to him. He shudders before losing his fight with consciousness.
“Kurt” Matt yelled, grabbing him to keep him steady. “Coach?” He asked, turning anxious eyes on Sue.
“Keep wrapping him with towels,” Sue commands. Shortly later the paramedics come, and after a flurry of movement and noise, Matt finds himself kneeling with empty arms in the shower. Puck suddenly stands and bolts out of the room. Matt follows, and Azimio looks irritated when Puck starts screaming in his face.
He looks flat out shocked when Matt punches him square in the face. He starts yelling obscenities and then Mr. Schue is there yanking everyone apart. It’s anticlimactic if Matt is honest.
Burt Hummel was rightfully furious and stormed down to the school, screaming at Figgins while Sue egged him on, it is quickly decided that Matt and Puck will not face any actual punishment for the brawl. Azimio is not suspended or even given detention, much to Burt’s anger, because they had no real proof Figgins explained.
Kurt returns to overprotectiveness and paranoia, but he has to admit it’s nice to be defended for once and not have to do it all on his own, so he lets his friends close ranks around him and defend him from prying questions and moronic jocks while he heals.
