A/N: written for the fabulous
youcallitwinter She doesn't even like Damon. That's what Caroline always tells herself when Damon unerringly finds her despite her best efforts.
Caroline is in Barcelona when Damon suddenly sits at her table, startling the beautiful Spanish boy she was hoping to take home with her. Within ten minutes, the boy is gone and Damon is drinking his glass of wine.
“Why do you keep doing this?” Caroline explodes in frustration, wishing she could fly across the table and beat him. “Can't you go bother Stefan for awhile?”
“I've bothered Stefan for 300 years. It's gotten a little...stale.”
“Then go find Elena!”
Damon's face darkened. “Elena is with Stefan.”
Caroline rarely keeps track of which Salvatore her friend is with this decade, but it never fails that, whenever Elena is with the younger brother, the older brother comes for her. “Leave me alone!”
When she arrives back at her apartment, Damon is in her shower, his bag is in her guest room, and Caroline knows he is not going anywhere.

They only time she can find Damon tolerable is when she is drinking, so Caroline begins her days with mimosas and keeps going throughout the day. If he was Stefan, he would have chastised her, but he is Damon, so he just pours a glass for himself as well.
One night they end up at a club, and Caroline is stunned when Damon suddenly grasps her hips, pulling her ass tight against him. “You're so fucking hot,” he breathes against her throat, and Caroline hates herself for getting wet, for pushing back against him.
He takes her hard in the alley behind the club, the brick tearing up her back as Damon thrusts into her, making her shout his name into the warm summer air.

“I don't know why always have to be so difficult,” Damon tells her later as they lie tangled in her sheets, the taste of his skin still fresh on her tongue.
Because you don't really want me.
Because you only come to me when you can't have Elena.
Because you never stay.
“Because I don't like you,” Caroline settles on, giving him half of the truth the way he only gives her half of his heart.
Damon falls asleep before she does, and Caroline finds herself studying the lines of his face, recommitting his beauty to memory before subtly lifting his arm, tucking herself against his body, trying not to wake him with her need to be held.
As her eyes start to close, Damon squeezes her gently, pressing a blind kiss to the back of her head, and Caroline tries to forgive herself for loving Damon Salvatore.
