[RL WITH TEN]

Ianto sat in a chair beside a hospital bed, clutching the hand of the person lying beside him. He had a mobile phone balanced against his other ear with his other hand, the line ringing. This was the third time he'd dialed the same number in a row, but he figured that the third time's a charm and all of that, right? Plus, he was kind of running out of options. Gwen had run off with Rhys to see what she could do to figure out how to explain this, what kind of investigating they could do at all, down so many members. She might even have roped Rhys into helping her out, he couldn't quite remember. The last few hours had been a bit of a blur. There was a click on the end of the line, and it wasn't voice mail this time.

"Doctor!" he said, surprised that he'd actually been able to get through. "I'm sorry to ring you like this, it's just. It's Jack..." His voice trailed off, and he has to take a minute and pause to collect his thoughts. Because what he has to say is impossible, but it's also the truth. He clutched the hand of the man on the bed, hooked up to the respirator and the heart monitors and IVs and everything horrible that came with situations like these. Jack's hand.

"It's Jack, Doctor. He's dying."

the dead line, jack, ten
