He woke up with his phone in his hand. Despite his hopes, he hadn’t gotten a text from Reid during the night either.

He tried calling, but only reached his voicemail.

Breakfast was spent in silence. It was just Luke and his father present, and they quietly ate before heading out to the car. Holden dropped him off at school, telling him that he’d pick him up at the end of the day so they could go speak with Lily again.

“We’ll figure this out, Luke. It’ll work out.”

Luke had nodded quickly and headed inside. He ran through the halls, but couldn’t see Reid anywhere.

Between every class he checked the halls, hoping to see him, but to no avail.

Lunch finally came, and he waited in the cafeteria, slowly eating his food as he stared at the door. Reid never came in.

His friends could sense the fear, but thankfully didn’t ask. They just let him eat in silence, and didn’t say anything as Luke finally got up and walked over to Reid’s usual table.

The conversations stopped as he reached the head of the table. All eyes were on him.

“Hi… I uh… I don’t mean to interrupt, but… have you guys seen Reid today? I… do you know where he is?”

“Yeah, he’s here.” A guy said, staring uninterested at Luke. “Around somewhere.”

“Thanks…” Luke sighed in relief. If Reid was at school, he was okay. “Thank you.” He said again, shooting the guy a quick smile before hurrying out of the cafeteria. ‘Outside!’ Luke thought. ‘He’s probably outside in his spot!’

But he wasn’t.

Luke stopped in his tracks, looking around in confusion as there was not a living soul outside. He waited a few minutes before going inside. The halls were beginning to fill up again as classes were getting ready to start.

Defeated, Luke went to his locker.

He had gotten the books for his next class, and was about to head to the classroom when he finally saw him.

He was weaving in and out past the crowds, quickly working his way down the hallway.

“Reid!!” He yelled, hurrying towards him.

Reid glanced at him, gave him a brief nod, and continued on down the hallway, quickly turning the corner.

Luke frowned, for a second, and ran after him.

“Reid! Reid, wait up!”

Reid stopped, turning his head slightly. “What? I’m late for class.”

Luke frowned, moving around to stand in front of him. “I’ve been worried about you! You didn’t answer my texts or my calls.”

Reid shrugged, letting his hands hang lifelessly down his sides. “It broke. Sorry.”

“Your phone broke?”

“Isn’t that what I just said? Look, I got to-“

“Go to class? Yeah, I heard that. Reid, what’s going on? What happened last night?” Luke stepped closer, lowering his voice with every word.

“Nothing. We’ll talk later, alright?” Reid slipped past him, but was stopped by Luke grabbing onto his arm.

“Reid, you’re scaring me…”

Reid sighed, and gently put his hand on Luke’s cheek. “Don’t be scared. We’ll talk later, all right? Now go before we’re both late.” He ran his thumb softly across his cheek, and gave him a small smile. Then he quickly turned and headed down the hall.

Luke watched him until he disappeared in the masses. And then with a sigh he headed in the other direction, to get to his own class. There was no way was he going to be able to concentrate now.

-

It wasn’t until the end of the school-day that Luke saw Reid again. He spent the time in between each class looking for him again, but once again was unable to find him. He had all but given up at the end of the day when he finally saw Reid, resting against Luke’s locker. His arms were crossed loosely across his stomach, and his eyes were closed.

As if sensing that Luke was approaching, he opened his eyes right before Luke reached him. He pushed himself off the locker and stood up. “Come on.”

“Where are we going?” Luke asked the retreating back. He received no reply, and had no choice but to hurry after him.

He should have known.

Reid rested against his spot on the wall with a sigh. He kept his gaze downwards, as if deep in thought.

Luke hesitantly stepped closer. “Reid?”

“I told you we couldn’t be caught.” He said simply, not looking up.

“I know, I’m sorry…” Luke bit his lip, reaching his hand out slowly to touch him. “Reid, did he… did your uncle do anything? I mean… he was just horrible last night and…”

“Don’t worry about me. I’m fine.” Reid finally raised his gaze, and for the first time that day he really met Luke’s eyes. He smiled softly, taking Luke’s reached-out hand. “Don’t worry.”

Luke sighed, shaking his head. “I do worry, Reid!”

“Don’t.” Reid replied, pulling on his hand until Luke fell softly against his body. “Don’t. I’m fine. How did things go with you, when you got home? Should I be awaiting a prison sentence for deflowering a minor?”

Luke shook his head. “That’s not funny, Reid… She said she would call the police on you.”

“Well, is she going too?”

“I don’t know… I don’t think so.”

“Yeah… I’m too pretty to go to prison anyway.”

Luke groaned and pulled back. “Are you really just going to joke right now? This is serious, Reid!”

Reid shrugged, comfortingly running his hand up and down Luke’s arm. “She won’t do that. If she does, you’ll hate her forever or something dramatic like that, and she loves you too much to risk that.”

“This is not just about me, you know??”

“I told you; I am fine.”

“No, you’re not! I can tell!” Luke sighed, placing a hand on each side of Reid’s face, staring intently into his eyes. “I heard what he said last night. About your dad?”

Reid flinched, and pulled his face out of Luke’s hold. “What? You heard wrong.”

“I don’t think I did… Reid, did-“

“I am not talking about that!” Reid barked, stepping around Luke. “You heard wrong. Get over it.”

Luke bit his lip, frowning in concern. “Reid-“

“Just shut up!” Reid glared at him, before turning his back. “I told you; I am fine. I am perfectly fucking fine, so why don’t you just leave it be?”

“Fine…” Luke whispered, staring longingly at Reid’s stiff back. Unshed tears burned in his eyes, but Luke refused to let them fall.

Neither boy moved for several minutes. It felt like hours.

Luke felt his phone vibrate in his pocket, and remembered that his father was waiting outside. “Reid, I have to go…”

Reid didn’t move, didn’t give any indication that he had heard him.

Luke carefully stepped closer, softly placing his hand on Reid’s back.

There was no reaction still, so he took the chance on stepping around him, coming face to face with the older boy.

Reid had his eyes closed and head bowed, breathing steadily.

“Reid?”

He nodded, barely noticeable.

Luke sighed and placed his hand on Reid’s cheek. “Reid, I’m sorry. I’ll let it go, okay? I won’t ask again. I’m sorry.”

Another careful nod. Eyes still closed.

“Reid?”

Sigh.

His arms came up and wrapped themselves around Luke’s body. He pulled him in, resting his chin on the top of Luke’s head.

Luke sighed happily, pressing his face into the crook of Reid’s neck. “I’m sorry.”, he repeated, pressing a kiss to the side of his neck. “I’m sorry.”

“Don’t apologize.” Reid whispered into his hair. “I just…” His voice trailed off, and they stood in each other’s embrace for another minute before Reid pulled back. “My phone’s broken. I’ll let you know when I get a new one.”

Luke nodded. “Okay.”

Reid smiled slightly, leaning in to rest his forehead against Luke’s. “Don’t worry about me, alright? I’m good. I’ll see you tomorrow.”

Luke forced a smile. “Yeah, I’ll try… See you tomorrow.”

Reid’s hand came up to caress his cheek. “Good.” He leaned in, barely brushing his lips against Luke’s. “Go on now. I don’t want you to get in more trouble than necessary.”

Luke moved forward, pressing his lips hard against Reid, demanding a kiss that he could feel. Both his hands came up to cup Reid’s face as he brushed his tongue over Reid’s lips.

Reid folded completely, and let him in. Their mouths clashed together, desperate and hungry. Each boy poured every single inch of their bodies and souls into the kiss. Their tongues met and battled for dominance, neither wanting to let go.

The need for oxygen forced them apart, and the sharp intakes of breaths seemed to pull them back to reality. Luke felt his phone vibrate, and he reluctantly pulled away.

Reid opened his eyes, and smiled; finally a real smile. He stepped forward, pecking Luke’s lips a final time. “Go.”

Luke touched his lips with his fingers, and nodded slowly. “See you…”

Reid nodded as he fell back against the wall, leaning his head back against it. “See you tomorrow, Luke.”

Luke used the little strength he had left to force his legs to function. They took him out to the parking lot where he found his father waiting. He offered no explanation to his lateness as he slipped into the passenger seat. Holden didn’t ask either, simply putting his phone back in his pocket before backing out of the parking space, and headed for the road.
