Colby smiled at the little girl with bright blue eyes and soft blonde hair. He was kneeling in front of her and patiently staying still as her tiny hands moved over the features of his face. She took her time and he couldn’t deny the lump that rose in his throat, knowing she was not more than six years old and would never see the bright colors in her classroom or the brilliance of sunshine. His thoughts were broken when she smiled. “Thank you for saving my daddy.”
In that moment, all the sacrifices of the job were worth it.
