I started fencing when I was young and at first it was just something to keep me occupied and that I also happened to find entertaining. Over a little time, however, I found I was actually quite good at it and really started to become interested. I know when most people envision fencing, all they think of is the white suit with a helmet and a sword with a blunt end. Boring, right?

I beg to differ. First of all, fencing has come a long way and most, if not all fencing weapons (the foil, the sabre and the epee) are now electrified, as are the suits. This makes the sport much more exciting, in my opinion. Secondly, most people don’t know that the sport is a lot more physical than thrusts and jabs. One must be agile and swift and able to maneuver, similar to how one must move in hand-to-hand combat situations, including martial arts.

Soon, I was the best in my group and had very little competition so I eventually decided to make a game out of it. That’s when the fantasies began. No longer was I a young man in modern day San Francisco. Instead, I was a dashing and daring swashbuckler, saving the day (and of course, the damsels in distress). During these fantasies, I would travel all over the world, showing up just in time to be the devastatingly handsome hero. I would effortlessly take down all of the villains, then sail off into the sunset and naturally, I always got the girl.

Never in my wildest imaginings did I think one day I would be spacejumping onto a drill fashioned by future Romulans, fighting for my life, and that of my friend. Actually, I never really thought I would ever have the opportunity to use my fencing skills, especially in my capacity as pilot of a starship. It got my heart pumping to think about it and all of my fantasies came rushing back to the forefront when Captain Pike chose me to accompany him. Sadly, there were no damsels in distress who could be impressed by my skills and my technique that I am so proud of. However, I did get to save the life of a friend, now my Captain, and I wouldn’t trade that reality for any fantasy that might be in my arsenal.

Who knows when I might be called upon again and maybe then there will be a dramatic sunset instead of me nearly plummeting to my death and I sure wouldn’t mind if there happened to be a beautiful woman in the fantasy. I figure if I am going to fantasize about something, I might as well make the most of it and make it as grand as possible. Let’s just hope that real life can keep up with me.
