So to summarise the last week...
Friday I left Birmingham and got the train to Bristol with
ricohard_draco. There we parted ways and I met up with my soon-to-be housemate Olly who swapped another girl for me at the station (almost like a cheesy movie) and took me ack to his house in Clevedon. In the evening I met a few of Olly's friends including a girl who was looking for a job and dating a Sainsburys Night Minion ( a situation I'm certainly familiar with), a swap was proposed but I thought I'd better hold onto
davegotsu. I also learnt a bit about the Speculative fiction (thats sci-fi to us plebs) society at Oxford. It seems they have a general society and then various societies for more specific things like Tolkien, Star Wars and babylon 5, all sounded a bit complicated to me. Anyway had some drinks and a generally pleasant evening.
Saturday was the first day of the Ashton Court festival near Bristol, only £6 entry. We rode a bus, climbed a hill and walked a field to get there. There were many many stalls selling all kinds of food, clothing (much of the hippyish variety), novelty items (including candle-powered steamboats) and useful things. I bought a parasol to keep the blazing sun off as I didn't have a hat or sunglasses, luckily I'd thought ahead and bought plenty of sn cream. We met some more of Ollys friends and acquaintances (that boy is a social butterfly) then we made some new ones all the while I was drinking vodka and coke (quite sensibly) and Olly (being a proper Somerset lad) was drinking cider and being increasingly random and confused. Eventually he wondered off for a while and came back saying he'd lost his sister's bag, i was watching steve harley at the time so i paid little attention. Later when the Cockney rebel set was done we tried to find the bag but ended up stealing a salad bowl. At this point I phoned Dave as Olly was engaged in hitting a friend over the head with the aforementioned salad bowl. When it had all finished Olly and I ran down a hill in the dark and Olly, who had somehow managed to remain drunk, managd to guide us to our lift back to Clevedon.
For most of the day it was mainly local bands playing but the main acts in the evening were Steve Harley and Cockeny Rebel and the Super Furry Animals. I visited the Blackout Tent which generally held conceptional acts, they were showing Sky Captian and the World of Tomorrow with a techno soundtrack being played over it, the free film was nice but it was boiling in there. We saw a swing band playing various covers including the Spice Girls, Motorhead and RHCP which was very amusing. I spent much of the day watching the Main stage first I saw Doreen Doreen who were a very lively group all dressed up ridiculously, they had a lot of energy and the lead singer had amazing stage presence she got everyone up and dnacing around to the Weather Girls, britney spars and other cheesy songs that the band parodied. There was a Ska band called The Scrub who were fairly enthusiastic. A performer clled Kid carpet made music using childrens toys which was odd then fnally Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel were on. That was great and despite the large headed people in front of me I got plenty of pictures. By this point it was about 8pm and the massive field was totally packed with people and Steve Harley said it was probably the largest audiene he'd performed to. The highlight for me was obviously Make Me Smile (come Up and See Me) which is a great song and one that usually puts me in a good mood. Super Furry Animals were OK but I'nm not really a fan and by this point i couldn't really see the stage for all the people.
Sunday was the second day of the festival but we headed up nmore leisurely and decided not to stay for the whole day. We also didn't drink alcohol and I didn't bring my parasol as I was afriad it'd get damaged. This turned out to be a mistake since, despite the many layers of sun cream i applied, I got sunburnt on my shoulders and back. I also felt very drowsy because of the blazing heat so olly grabbed me a free sunhat which i wore for most of the day, I probably looked terrible but I was too hot to give a damn.
There were several good acts on Sunday including a couple of very enthusiastic Ska bands who got everyone up and dancing around. One was so Skacore that they didn't have lyric though they did have the largest sax I have ever sen, it was almost as tall as the guy who was playing it. The other main Ska band was Baby Head, the musicians came on with animal masks and the two guys doing lyrics, raps and general MCing were extremely good at getting the crowd doing what they wanted. Other good bands included the Fondas and the Might Stars who were apparebntly festival favourites and were more like the type of music I tend to listen to 9although I do like Ska as well). Olly knew the drummer in Steveless who had been recommended by the late John Peel, they had various technical difficulties so the lead singer ended up throwing his guitar around because it was aready broken, the drummer told us that the drums weren't put together properly and I think these problems might have spoiled the act. That said I found the lyrics quite uninspiring and rather self-indulgent so I doubt I'll be buying any of their music. We left Ashton Court early and found a bus back to Clevedon. I spent the rest of the evening hanging aorund at Olly's. His mother was great and had brought plenty of gluten free food from the super market including some great breakfats rolls that I will have to find.
Monday Olly and I headed into Bristol and wandered around trying to find somewhere to have lunch (in my case this is not as easy as it sounds). We settled on a Wetherspoons pub and I got a great bargain because they were out of baked potatoes and the only other meal i could eat was about £2 more expensive. While we were eating it started to rain, I mean really really RAIN. Considering I'd been too hot for the last 2 days you'd think i'd be more pleased however it was drenching, all the stuff the in my bag, including my book and tickets, was soaked. I was dripping wet, nmy fairly baggy skirt was clinging to my legs and for various reasons I was wearing a white top and a black bra. Generally I looked a right mess so i had to get changed in the toilets at Bristol teple meades Station, this meant that I had to wear a strappy top on a well air-conditioned Virgin train but i gradually managed to dry out. I got the train to New Street because I'd already booked the tickets but then I had to go back down the line to Worcester as I had a hospital appointment early on Tuesday morning and had to visit home. My brother and sister annoyed me by going on about how ugly my parasol was, which wasn't necessary considering how I hardly ever see them. I went to visit my step gran with mum and Vicky, I was much more talkative than usual which everyone commented on, I think Vicky was annoyed that i was taking the attention but I hadn't seen Gran in months so I felt I had a right to talk. Besides I don't see why I should be the quiet one in the family any more. Managed to have a nice tlak with both my dad and Vicky in the evening so I suppose I've got some decent family time.
Tuesday I had to get up early and catch the morning bus to the 6th form college (I can't believ I used to do that every day) from there I walked through the woods to the hospit;al. There was much waiting around in between but basically my weight is up (I'm nearly 8 stone at last :) ), I had a blood test, I need more iron in my diet and I'm on Folic Acid for the next 3 months after which i get another blood test. I went back home to pack my things and have lunch then I was rushed to the train station and went back t New Street. Evenutally got back to the flat about 3pm and after unloading some stuff went to Daves. I've mostly been there ever since.
Phew that was a long one and I'm hungry now so I shall stop prattling.
