Of all the myriad fanworks there are out in the wide world of fandom, fanfic has always been my thing, and more recently podfic of course. But fanart or fanvids, for example, have never really spoken to me. Still don't really, words have a lot more to say to me than images (it's not something I can do anything about really, it's just the way things are). However I can, and do, appreciate the talent of the artists that make such fanworks, and I appreciate the time and effort that goes into the making (even more so I suppose, after I got into podficcing).

Once, I took part in a big bang where I even managed to finish my story. To my eternal shame, I didn't even remember about the artist until I was pretty much finished with the story and as such left the artist with a ridiculously small amount of time to make anything (and they were wonderful and not angry at all, at least they didn't say anything to me and I'm so grateful). My point is, I've definitely never really considered the artists' side of things in such matters and I'll bet that there's a lot of us who don't (and that's only natural).

cupidsbow has written An Open Letter to Fest Runners: Writing vs Art (on Dreamwidth, the post can also be found on Livejournal). It was something of an eye opener to me and I encourage anyone who participates in big bangs and suchlike, not just the organizers, to take a look. So, go read what they have to say, it makes a lot more sense than anything I can manage.
