Lifetime Fic Bingo: 2009
I'm not feeling much enthusiasm for writing up fics today. It's been at least a month since I read the first one for this round, though, and I neglected to take any notes this time. I feel I should get something down while I still remember my reactions. The results may be sketchier than usual.
It's 2009, not a good year for me. Lady Gaga is on the radio. Here in the USA, the year's top film is Avatar. New terms coined include: alt-right, body-shame, cryptocurrency, dox, gig economy, jegging, and makerspace.
For the year 2009, I read five fics: one Man from U.N.C.L.E. fic, one Harry Potter x Sherlock Holmes crossover, and three Professionals fics.
The Man from U.N.C.L.E. fic was The UFO Affair by Sev (severa), in which Illya and Napoleon investigate a rash of crop circles. This was a fun casefic in the style of canon (albeit without an innocent). It included some humor, some mystery, some danger, and an agreeable sprinkling of slash. It wasn't one for the Beloved Collection, but I had a good time reading it. 8,793 words. Napoleon/Illya slash.
The Fourth Deathly Hallow by gingertart50 is a Harry Potter x Sherlock Holmes crossover. It's also a Harry/Snape fic. That pairing doesn't appeal to me at all, but this fic was recommended in such glowing terms on Reddit that I decided to try it anyway. It is indeed very good. The plot is inventive and absorbing, the magic is neither under- or over-powered, and the glimpses of a Victorian wizarding world are intriguing. Overall, the depictions of the characters and their interactions are excellent as well, for both canons. I wasn't convinced by the budding romance between Snape and Harry, but that was really the only issue I had with the fic. (For those wondering, Harry is of age in this story. It takes place soon after the Battle of Hogwarts, in which Snape only appeared to die.) This was my favorite fic for the year. 56,311 words. Harry Potter/Severus Snape slash. Particularly recommended.
The first Professionals fic I read was Endlessly by FJBryan, in which Bodie falls into a coma after a head injury. This is a sweet fic, perhaps too sweet in places for some people's taste. I liked it overall, but I'm having some trouble recalling the details of my reactions now. (This was the first fic I read for this round-I don't always write them up in order-and a lot has been going on.) 13,390 words. Bodie/Doyle slash.
I also read the Professionals fic Stuck by asymphototropic. This fic has a very novel premise. It seems a little unsure what it wants to do with it, though. The tone is uneven, wandering between comic and dramatic. I enjoyed things about the story-Bodie quoting poetry and playing the guitar was fun-and I wanted to know how it ended, but I also found it kind of disorienting. 31,279 words. Bodie/Doyle slash.
Finally, I read One Summer by Slantedlight (byslantedlight), another Professionals fic. It follows the Lads as they try to navigate their changing relationship while on holiday. This story was created for the Comic Relief charity fundraising event. It was written and published paragraph by paragraph in response to donations. The result is a little uneven in its pacing, which is hardly surprising, but otherwise enjoyable, with stylish writing and solid characterizations. I particularly liked the ending. 42,614 words. Bodie/Doyle slash.
