Lifetime Fic Bingo: 2002

It's 2002. Eminem is on the radio. Here in the USA, the year's top film is Spider-Man. New terms coined include: airplane mode, burkini, emerald ash borer, goji berry, parkour, reggaeton, selfie, thumb drive, TL;DR, and vlog.

For 2002 I read (you guessed it) five fics: one Man from U.N.C.L.E., one Sherlock Holmes, two Professionals, and one Sentinel x The Matrix crossover.

The Man from U.N.C.L.E. fic was Remission of Sin by nickovetch in which Illya is captured and brainwashed by Thrush. This story was okay. I found the set-up interesting, but I didn't feel as if the author spent enough time exploring its consequences. 13,487 words. Gen.

The Sherlock Holmes fic was an anonymous piece called Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea. It takes place just after the events of The Devil's Foot and mostly depicts the relationship between Holmes and Watson. This fic excels at communicating the subtle and unspoken. The effect is quite unusual. 2,971 words. Holmes/Watson slash (maybe). Particularly recommended.

I also read Sorry, Bodie by Gil Hale. This is a comic Professionals fic in which Marty Martell encounters Doyle in a tight spot. Comedy in fic often doesn't do much for me, but I found this pretty amusing. Also, in this fic Marty is straight, which is novel. 3,260 words. Gen. Particularly recommended.

The Professionals fic In His Sights by Luca is a short first-meeting fic. It had one quite unusual element I found intriguing, but on the whole I didn't feel very strongly about it in any direction. It's fine. 939 words. Slash.
Comments with (minor) spoilers:
[Spoiler (click to open)]The unusual element was that this fic paired Doyle and Jax, at least in rumor. I don't think I've ever run into that pairing before. I kind of like it. I think they do have good chemistry in their few scenes together.

Finally we come to the Sentinel x Matrix crossover: Verity by KerrAvonsen. I have never been a particular fan of The Matrix and I haven't seen it since its release when I was 12. Nevertheless, I loved this fic. It brought together so many aspects of the world of The Sentinel and meshed them beautifully with that of The Matrix. It also created and sustained real suspense and a feeling of high stakes throughout the story. I really enjoyed the way it presented Jim and Blair's relationship, as well. This fic was my favorite for the year. 35,486 words. Gen. Particularly recommended.
