Lifetime Fic Bingo: 2001

Feb 28, 2024 22:58

It's me again. My output of write-ups has fallen off a lot lately, but for happy reasons. Over the past two months I've been putting most of my energy into reviewing math. I have a bachelor's degree in math, but have been unable to engage with the subject for about fifteen years due to mental and physical illness. Lately, circumstances have finally aligned so that I'm able to work on recovering some of my missing knowledge. It is a very important development for me.

Now, on with the show...

It's 2001, and I'm starting high school as the Twin Towers are destroyed. Linkin Park is on the radio. Here in the USA, the year's top film is Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. New terms coined include: ack, anti-vaxxer, bromance, captcha, chiweenie, dubstep, forever chemical, Internet of Things, lean in, and twerking.

For 2001, I read five fics: two Man from U.N.C.L.E., two Professionals, and one Sherlock Holmes x Quantum Leap crossover.

The Sherlock Holmes x Quantum Leap crossover was Angel Unaware by Legion, in which Sam encounters Holmes and Watson in Victorian England. I'm afraid I didn't like this much. The beginning set up an intriguing mystery for Holmes and Watson and interesting challenges for Sam and Al. I found the ending very disappointing, though. It was a bit like untying a knot by tossing it into a fire.

It didn't help that this is both a Holmes/Watson and a Sam/Al fic. The former is fine, but I do not ship Sam and Al. I didn't realize that pairing was part of the story until I had already read quite a bit of it. Since it seemed promising at that point, I kept on; I've read fics before featuring pairings I don't favor and enjoyed them. As I said, though, I was disappointed by the ending of this fic, so there wasn't anything to make up for my lack of interest in the Sam/Al pairing. 29,371 words. Holmes/Watson and Sam/Al slash.
Comments with spoilers:
[Spoiler (click to open)]In fact, the main conflicts in this story were resolved by the Power of Love between Al and Sam, so not being invested in the Sam/Al pairing was a serious problem.

I did like the presentation of Holmes as gray asexual, though, and the account of how that played out in his relationship with Watson.

The first Man from U.N.C.L.E. fic I read was The Kamikaze Affair by Lee_the_T. This was much more to my taste. It was a case story with an exciting plot and lots of good action writing. It also showed the bond between Illya and Napoleon vividly without too many bold emotional strokes. (I don't personally mind bold emotional strokes, but I admire the craft of authors who manage without them.) 15,227 words. Gen. Particularly recommended.
Comments with spoilers:
[Spoiler (click to open)]There was one thing in this fic that confused me: why Thrush kidnapped Napoleon by breaking down his wall, when their plan was apparently to conceal the fact that he had been replaced, as they had done with the other agents.

I also read The Man from Yesterday by Darklady, a Man from U.N.C.L.E. fic in which Illya and Napoleon are transported from 1968 to 2001. I liked this fic a lot. Watching how our heroes react to their situation and riding along as they discover the future was great fun. There were a few writing issues, but the character voices were very good, both in the narration from Illya's point of view and in the exchanges between Illya and Napoleon. I thought the plot got a bit slow in the middle of the fic, but it picked up again near the end and finished strongly. 86,194 words. Illya/Napoleon slash. Particularly recommended.
Comments with spoilers:
[Spoiler (click to open)]That said, the very end, where our heroes reform UNCLE with the blessing of Vladimir Putin, was more than a bit uncomfortable from this remove. 0_0

The first Professionals fic I read was In Balance With This Life by mazzysue (mauvemaz). This is a short fic with a nonlinear structure that adds depth to a fairly simple story. There isn't much I can say about it while avoiding spoilers, but I thought it was excellent. It was my favorite fic for the year. 4,422 words. Bodie/Doyle slash. Particularly recommended.

Finally, I read Fire Held High and Away by Miriam Heddy, another Professionals fic. This fic shows a somewhat older Doyle and Bodie working non-field jobs at CI5 and spending time together in their off hours. It's very much a relationship story with little plot outside that. The story that it does tell is well crafted, though, with effective build-up to its conclusion. And the Lads are so Lads-like. All of their interactions feel true to character and the dialog is perfect. This fic is excellent and was very close to being my favorite for the year. 24,196 words. Bodie/Doyle slash. Particularly recommended.
