L is for Like Real People Do, Y is for You Had to Make Him Mad
Over the past couple of weeks, I've read three original novels, which is unusual for me. Two of them were Death By Silver and Death at the Dionysus Club, the two entries in the Mathey and Lynes series by Melissa Scott (
mescott) and Amy Griswold (
amygriswold). These are murder mysteries set in an alternate Victorian England that has functioning magic. The first won a Lambda Literary Award for best LGBT speculative fiction in 2014, though I think the second is even better. At any rate, after enjoying the series, I naturally went to check out the fanfic it has inspired, so the first three fics I have to add to my bingo card are Mathey and Lynes fics.
Death By Spirits by notkingyet is a long fic that turned out to be a crossover with the stories of Carnacki the Ghost Finder by William Hope Hodgeson (which I have read). It is a fun and exciting tale that fits nicely into the world of the Mathey and Lynes series. 17,245 words. Canonical Ned Mathey/Julian Lynes.
In
Viola sororia, also by notkingyet, Miss Frost contributes her knowledge of the language of flowers to a case. This is a short fic, and is more a scene from a story than a complete story itself. It has some charming details, but I found it unsatisfying. (I admit that I'd hoped it would have something to do with the
meaning I associate with the flower Viola sororia. That it didn't is hardly the author's fault.) 1,516 words. Gen.
Eruv by
imperfectcircle sees Ned and Julian involving themselves in metaphysical politics and reflecting on the course their lives are taking. This fic is wonderful. It seamlessly adds depth and complexity to the world of canon, then tells a multilayered story in that augmented setting. The characterizations are excellent, too, and the characters' thoughts are beautifully rendered. 11,683 words. Canonical Ned Mathey/Julian Lynes. Particularly recommended.
I've also read two fics from other fandoms recently.
Like Real People Do by Todaywearesoldiers is a Sherlock Holmes fic in which Holmes and Watson face the threat of exposure of their romantic relationship. I didn't enjoy it very much. Its dialog felt anachronistic, and while it has the beginning of an interesting plot, it doesn't follow it through to any resolution, which I found disappointing. 7,480 words. Holmes/Watson slash.
In
You Had to Make Him Mad, an A-Team story by TheDiamondSword400, Face is held hostage during a mission. This is a serviceable fic with good interplay between the characters, but I found some of its details implausible enough to detract from the whole. 1,259 words. Gen.
