“Yamada-san,” Yuri called, successfully stopping Yamada from reading the next line to look up at him. His expression was disapproving. “Yama-chan,” Yamada scolded, closing the book with a thud and placing it beside the bed-side table, “or Ryosuke actually. I’d prefer that.”
Yuri blinked, not realizing that he had made the mistake of using the polite form to address the other guy again and changed it quickly.
“Yama-chan,” he started and Yamada smiled.
“Yeah?”
“Can I ask you something?” His voice was soft, as if afraid to voice out his thoughts and Yamada chuckled.
“Of course!”
“Is there… is there someone you love?” Yuri asked cautiously and watched as Yamada’s expression turn into one of surprise. Is that hurt in his eyes? Yamada fell silent and Yuri waited patiently.
“I do..” His voice wasn’t as stable as he expected it to be and Yamada took a deep breath to steady himself. He looked out of the window into the night sky and his eyes were distant when he continued, “but he’s had an accident and he don’t remember me anymore, or anything we had been through actually.”
“That sounds like something similar to me isn’t it?”
Yamada turned back to look at Yuri with a slight smile, “it is, isn’t it?” he replied with affection.
Yuri waited for him to continue but silence followed. Yamada was lost in his thoughts again as he unconsciously start to straighten out the sheets and the blanket that was on Yuri.
“Do you still love him?” His tone was gentle but curious and he watched as Yamada pause in his actions before looking up, locking eyes with Yuri.
“Of course I do,” Yamada replied softly, “and I always will.” His voice was filled with love and for a moment Yuri had the strangest feeling. He wished he was the one. He wished he was the subject of Yamada’s affection and love but Yuri couldn’t understand why. He had only met Yamada a week ago, when the nurse came in to inform him that a volunteer will be here to read to him and to keep him company. He enjoyed Yamada’s company and the stories he read to him were interesting and all to his taste, strangely enough. He love the way Yamada would smile, his eyes twinkling and it makes Yuri happy as well. The strangest was that Yuri felt like they were friends for a really long time and it makes him happy that Yamada visits every day. He's starting to get used to seeing Yamada everyday.
Yuri tried to stifle his yawn but it came anyway and Yamada chuckled before reaching up to thumb the tear from his eye and pat his head. “It’s late, get some sleep.” He stood up and waited for Yuri to make himself comfortable before tucking the sheets around him. “See you tomorrow.” Yamada pat his head again and his hands lingered longer than usual before he turn to leave, closing the door silently behind him. Yamada sighed when he was sure he was out of earshot and rubbed his eyes sleepily. He was waiting for a miracle and it seemed like it won’t be coming soon. But he was undeterred. Yuri would remember him someday and he would wait, no matter how long it takes.
