Yamada was sure, whenever he thought of this moment, that Yuri would be sorted into Ravenclaw. He’s smart, Yuri always had been, and Yamada knew him since they were born. Their families knew each other since they were schooling together and so when Yamada’s old enough to make friends, Yuri’s his first.
Which is why when the sorting hat shouted “Slytherin!” to the watching crowd, Yamada frowned in confusion. He watched as Yuri hopped off the stool and made his way to the cheering crowd of green, their eyes caught and Yuri gave him a slight smile. Yamada nodded and smiled back to him, happy even though he was absolutely sure Ravenclaw was Yuri’s house.
Yamada might have overlooked the amount of times Yuri tricked him into doing things for himself, or how he always manages to slip away from trouble and left Yamada alone to get all the punishment. All of these were overlooked, because to Yamada that’s how it works with Yuri. Sadly, the traits to Yuri’s true house did not surface to Yamada and he probably wouldn’t understand how Yuri got sorted into Slytherin.
A few names were called out as the first years got sorted and Yamada waited patiently for his to be called. Hufflepuff’s his house, he was 100% certain on that. His parents were from Hufflepuff too and he was always told how Hufflepuff he is and so when the hat shouted it out to the crowd, he grinned all the way to his table and accepted the hugs that came his way.
Yamada nibbled on his bread and watched as Yuri laugh at something his fellow housemate said. He wouldn’t bring himself to admit this but Yamada’s jealous. Time spent with Yuri became lesser as they had different class schedules. Sadly, different houses have different curriculum and the only time they could meet would be one period of charms class which they shared. Yamada missed talking to Yuri, he missed having fun with him. Basically, Yamada missed being around Yuri. He was about to drop into self-moping mode when Yuri suddenly looked up and across the hall, their eyes met, and Yuri gave him a sweet smile as if to say good morning. Yamada smiled back, maybe the day wouldn’t be that bad after all.
