“What are you doing here?” Arthur queried when the door to the king’s chambers opened and in stepped Guinevere. She was carrying a bottle filled with a green liquid that looked disgusting. “I thought we agreed to meet in the forests behind the castle grounds!”

He whispered as he spoke. “And we will,” Gwen replied. “Gaius sent me with the King’s medicine. He’s been suffering from heartburn.”

Working for Gaius was clearly more rewarding to Gwen than carrying out her simple chores around the castle. Arthur was especially glad for her because she seemed too bright to waste her talent on waiting on other people. She wasn’t as daft as Merlin after all.

“That’ll be dinner with the ambassador,” Arthur said with a smile. “Trying to negotiate a way to convincing the foreign kings that Camelot is fine. I heard he wasn’t well and I came to check how he was.”

“You don’t need to explain yourself to me, Arthur” Gwen said with a chuckle.

She placed the bottle on the table on which the papers Uther had clearly been studying lay along with a note from Gaius with instructions on when he should take the drug.

She looked up at Arthur and they watched each other for a while before they both smiled and leant forward to kiss each other. The kiss was just a simple one that lasted ten seconds. But when those ten seconds ended Arthur brought his hand up to cup Gwen’s cheek to keep her steady rather than pulling away. Gwen responded by tilting her head slightly and pulling him deeper.

Her eyes shot open.

“We shouldn’t do this here,” Gwen said nervously. “These are the king’s chambers.”

Arthur seemed to take offense. “It’s only a kiss Gwen...”

“What if the king (your father) were to walk in and catch us--?”

She was interrupted by the sound of footsteps coming towards the chamber door. Before she could really register what was happening Arthur had grabbed her hand and pulled her to one side. They went behind a curtain in a far nook of the room. It was so small they were pushed right up close to each other. Not that they were bothered.

Gwen held her breath and Uther Pendragon walked through the door, talking to himself. She bit her lip as he searched the papers on the table to try and find a certain report that he wanted to show the ambassador. Arthur’s hand was resting across her, inches from her mouth. She found it distracting: she had the sudden urge to kiss it. She knew she shouldn’t as Arthur would almost certainly jerk, then Uther would be alerted to them behind the curtain.

The king noticed the bottle and the note Gwen had left.

He picked it up and read it. “Take after every meal,” it read. Gwen knew, she had written it on Gaius’s instruction. “Any more problems see Gaius.”

Arthur’s fingers brushed Gwen’s cheek as he moved slightly. She nearly giggled.

Uther slipped the bottle into his pocket and picked up the papers he was looking for. He then glanced around the room. He stopped as he looked in the direction of the curtain. Arthur and Gwen held their breaths. Arthur pulled Gwen tighter to him, as if doing so would make them merge into the wall. Uther seemed to creep slowly towards the curtain. The lovers closed their eyes and held their breaths. After ten seconds nothing happened.

Arthur opened his eyes and saw his father looking at something just opposite the curtains. He bent down and picked up a piece of paper that in the scuffle to get behind the curtain Arthur and Gwen had knocked to the floor.

Uther shook his head and turned to walk out the room. As he closed the door Arthur and Gwen heaved a sigh of relief. They emerged from the curtain slowly in case he came back.

After a moment they felt safe enough to emerge from the room. As they walked towards the door Gwen tugged on Arthur’s sleeve. He turned back and saw her smiling.

“What?” he returned the smile.

“Arthur” she began coyly. “Why did you tug us behind that curtain?”

“I was worried he would catch us together.”

“You’re a prince and I’m a servant” she replied. “As long as we weren’t kissing or anything I don’t think he’d have suspected anything. He knows I work for Gaius these days.”

Arthur shrugged and grinned at her cheekily. “It was quite exciting though, wasn’t it?”
