Soundbytes of the Night

Jul 21, 2006 01:10

We (starchild42, deadspeaker, and flyingflag, who never uses his account and is better known as Cheesy Andrew, and I) went to Settler's Cafe tonight for dinner and games. We played Taboo for 2 uproarious hours, and having just posted a comment on deadspeaker's LJ, I reiterate: Playing Taboo really improves your standard of writing.

It being us, the game degenerated into a very guttery (to use a HP fandom term), very geeky, very injoke-filled, 2 hours of hilarity. Some of the more memorable soundbytes of the night, as far as I remember - feel free to add stuff, guys:

---
deadspeaker, hereafter 'd': "You fall into it, and the first word sounds a lot like a slang term for 'breast'."
starchild42 (s) and I (t): *slow blink*
-a few seconds later-
s: "Booby trap? That took me a bit to think of."
t: *absolute admiration*
---
d: "It's a Coldplay song,"
*all start throwing titles at her*
d: *turns to s* "What are we?"
s: "Oh! Scientists!"
---
A little later...
t: *laughs* "A Coldplay album?"
d & s: "Parachutes."
a: "A Rush of Blood To the Head?"
*much laughter*
---
t: "It's black and behind you on a hot day," *gesticulating to indicate sun in front*
-simultaneously-
d: "The Reaper?"
s: "The Kraken?"
*all fall over with laughter*
---
Andrew (a): "I am a - ?"
t: "Boy? Man?"
d: "Geek?"
---
d: "...Monochromatic...ursine...creature..."
s, t, a: "...Ursine?"
d: *desperately gesticulating*
s, t, a, gamely guessing: "Zebra? Uh..."
d: *gives up on that route* "When you don't sleep well, what eyes do you get?"
s, t, a: "Panda"
d: "Yep"
s, t, a: "What is ursine anyway?"
d: "Ursine, like the Latin for bear? Like Ursa Major?"
us: *headdesk* "We should have known that..."
---
s: "What -Bob Squarepants and Gary the snail?" *staring at me*
d: "Sponge,"
t: *falls over with laughter*
You know, I think that's where and why we started 'meep'ing. We vaguely remember long late night conversations about Gary the meeping snail, which was the only character we knew from the show, since neither of us watch TV. But my cafeteria showed it, and Sandy had been subjected to it in class, and we saw part of an episode together when she came to visit once, and it featured Gary, so.
---
a: "Uhh...when two people go out on a date, and someone else goes along...?"
-after various tries-
someone: "Chap...erone...?"
d: "Date? Molecular chaper- oh."
---
t: *distracted by food arrival* "Uh...American natives...uh...spirits...uh...worship..."
server: *starts gesticulating as he moves away, drawing out a long vertical pole in the air* "That's a hard one,"
d: "Totem Pole?"
t: "Yep! *to server* Thanks!" :D
---
d: "Ok, when you plate out a plasmid, what are the resultant colonies?"
us: *try various bio terms, since the three girls are all bio majors*
-Finally-
s: "Clone?"
---
d, once again: "When you use a restriction enzyme, it has a what rate?"
s & t, variously: "Fast? Active? Reaction?"
d: "It's also a word for how fast something...oh, can't say that...it's also a kind of food."
-Eventually-
t: "Turnover? *at nod* "Turnover? Restriction enzymes?!"
---
d: *turns to s* "We use this to melt agarose gel."
s: *immediately* "Microwave."
---
s: "Uh...in a paper, a part of it, under the title..."
d & t: "Subheading? Subtitle? Section?"
d: "Abstract, Methods, Introduction...?"
s: *amused and frustrated*
It was Figure, anyway.
---
t: "The main character in Stranger In A Strange Land?" *staring helplessly at starchild, trying desperately to remember either 'Card' or 'Ender' before giving up and going for Heinlein instead*
s: *slowly* "...Valen...tine?"
d and a: *blank stare*
t: *amazed that these people are that unfamiliar with it* No, seriously, you have no clue how geeky these guys are. xD
---
In illustration:
s: "8 bits make a -?"
a and d, in immediate unison: "Byte"
t: *shakes head* "You guys are such geeks."
---
d: "If you bang something against a wall a few times..." *blank stares all around* "*starts banging head against wall* "Brain - ?"
s, t a, variously: "Tumour? Aneurysm? Freeze?"
d: *headwalls more*
Eventually someone gets Damage, which was what she was trying for.
---
s: "Large...vicious...sea creature..."
t: "Kraken?"
(d: "Shark", which would be correct.)
*all fall over*

Yeah we were a little stuck on the Kraken. Oh, the profusion of Pirates jokes and references!

t: "They're really hard to please, they hated Black Pearl - no, I mean, the latest Pirates movie -" (Critic)

We saw 'Organist' on a back side and went "Tentacles!"

And so on.

a: "A...water...vessel...mostly rich-"
d: "Ship? Boat?"
s: "The Black Pearl?"
a: "-mostly rich people have them."
*all fall over*
-Eventually-
someone: "Yacht?"

Looking at words on the other side of one of the cards (the green, and as it turns out, the harder side - we were lucky we arbitrarily decided to do the purple side):

t: "Al Gore? How do you do that?"
d: "I dunno...a type of rhythm?"
s and t: *blank stare* I cotton on after a second or ten.
t: "That's bad..."

We entertained ourselves with the back sides of the cards as well...gods were they difficult. And amusing. Among other things, the writers of the game seem to have an obsession with Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky and words like Ulhuru. >< And there were quite a few words that we actually got and spluttered over before discarding them and not even trying to describe them - like Vibrate, Shag, Bang. You learn so much about how residential you and your friends' minds are in the gutter, when you play a charades word game. xD

But my personal favourite, though it was on a back side, so we didn't actually get it?

Slash. Words you cannot say: Cut, Knife, Tires, Burn, Guns n' Roses. *gigglelaugh*

deadspeaker was entranced by the Bosnia one, as well. xD

*giggles*

But I'm tired now, though at least I feel clean - the server managed to spill minestrone soup all over me and root beer all over Sandy. At least they were very apologetic, gave us many serviettes, replaced all the food and drink that spilled, turned a blind eye to the extra 20 minutes or so we used - we didn't notice the time - and gave us a 20% discount. And they were friendly, and nice, and very penitent, which helped. But so I had to take another shower when I got back.

It's just such a smart concept, especially since there really is very little to do in Singapore except hang out in shopping centres. Which, since none of us are shoppers, got old very fast, so the others, who've been hanging out together for the last year or so, found this place. I got lucky, I guess, I got to skip the boring shopping centre outings. Some consolation for missing out on the year, maybe. :D

We're considering a Firefly and/or Farscape and/or Cranium marathon next. Probably next weekend. I got all of Firefly and Farscape and Peacekeeper Wars for Christmas last year - I squeed about it then - a friend of mine torrented and burned them all, and made me a copy. And my place has a projection screen, and watching scifi ship battles on a large screen is just cool. :D We'll see.

[Edit: It has been brought to my attention that I should probably mention that next Friday evening and Saturday evening are out for me, and I believe Sandy said Saturday afternoon is out as well...but it can be the week after if Sunday doesn't work...]

I want to learn Latin. *apropos of nothing*

I finally got all of Katie's music mp3-ed and more or less on my player. Have been playing party shuffle for a while, and I really like the mixes. But am currently listening to straight Flogging Molly. That was one of the bands I wanted to get from her, specifically, and I like it. It's Irish Rock-ish, and I do like that genre so.

Tiiiired. Sleeeep.
