when i reach above my bookshelf and dismiss the tender glow of my bedside lamp
then the warm yellow pin-stripes of my bedspread vanish
to reveal the street lights checkered across the ceiling creases
and that is when my mind wanders
to a distant trail a deserted track
where you extend your arms and tiptoe along the rail

"I'd rather not,"
she mumbled nervously as she strode
farther away from the waves.

Under the shimmering surface,
the sea creature snarled,
"Yeah, that's right.  Off you go,"
and he submerged with a whirl of bubbles
into the deep blue sea
to join its sea monster clan.
