when i reach above my bookshelf and dismiss the tender glow of my bedside lamp
then the warm yellow pin-stripes of my bedspread vanish
to reveal the street lights checkered across the ceiling creases
and that is when my mind wanders
to a distant trail a deserted track
where you extend your arms and tiptoe along the rail
listen to the chemistry of chords and whispers
longing perhaps to exchange tales with a stranger
to receive an invitation to another magnificent journey
to see incandescent hues of sunlight among cumulous clouds
to commend the light of stars after their long journey to reach your skin
to come across a familiar smile
or perhaps an unfamiliar one
to run
to steady your heart
to breathe and
take a step
to cradle her hand
with your pale, thin fingers
to hear the world sigh
to receive a golden rose
dear heart
we needn't fear
for happiness is eternal
irreplaceable and irrevocable
to live one hundred days and only find the sun in the sky
or to live a day and see the sun in one's heart
to hear music only through melody
or to hear music in the breath of your voice
the dance of our words
as they sew a magnificent tapestry
resilient as the ocean to any burning flame
within us the courage
to quell all despair
the transience of dismay
the perpetuity of spirit
i do not fear
and neither should you
for this is only one wall obstructing your path
one out of the infinite ahead
so take my hand this time
and let us climb this together
i'm right here
