Buckhorn vacation part I

The drive up from Toronto was uneventful. During my first few days, I've seen 3 chipmunks, thousands of stars, a Milky Way, 2 fish, a heron, numerous sightings of a cheerful ferret, 3 ospreys, 2 hawks of some kind, and 4 satellites. No loons yet, or frogs or water snakes. I went swimming today and test-drove the new bikini. It stayed on, happily. No fish bit my toes, but a little one got awful close as I was dangling my legs off the dock. (This is an ongoing fear of mine.) This afternoon I went with my mother to inspect this year's fashions at "The Good Buy Room", the local second-hand shop under the library run by little old ladies. It mainly offers voluminous flowery blouses and polyester elastic-waist pants, but given a good search, you can sometimes find something good. In previous years I have scored such finds as the phenomenally slutty dress I wore as part of a costume to Camilla's Halloween wedding. This year it's just been a t-shirt, 2 sweaters and a linen overalls-style dress that I'm going to have to get hemmed. All for $10. This afternoon will be my annual applesauce-making from the sour apple tree next to the cottage. Unfortunately it's been too dry all summer so campfires are banned. No marshmallows. It gets cold at night, and last night, wearing socks in bed, I nearly got a good night's sleep.
