Okay, I've got a technical problem that maybe some of my friends on here can help me with...
I know, I know, unusual. (:
A while back, I set up a patch panel and ran some cable (Cat 5e) for my dad's church. Bottom row on the patch panel has the incoming lines (6 sockets per line, 4 lines). Top row has rooms (4 sockets allocated per room, because I ran a single line to each room). No cable is more than 100 feet, and we were careful when stapling them to the wall/roof corners that no staple ever pierced the cabling. Things were working great until the other day, when suddenly one of the rooms lost all connectivity. So I brought in my RJ-45 line pair tester (it tests each wire pair for connection breaks, signal strength, static, crossover / bleeding from other pairs, and pair reversal for 100baseT and a few other networking standards support). One of the pairs listed as a connection break, but we traced the line twice though, and found no breaks; the punch-down hadn't been touched, but was re-punched anyway, just in case; the jack wiring also hadn't been touched but was also redone anyway; still nada. The other three pairs, however, listed as clear. As in, perfect connection, including the jack and the patch cable that was plugged into the phone line. Plugging a phone into the incoming phone jack on the patch panel that it was plugged into and you get a clear dial tone. Plugging the patch cable back into that patch panel phone jack, and plugging the same phone into the jack on the other end of the "clear" line? Nothing. Dead silence.
No other cabling has any problems, and we don't know of anything that changed to cause this.
Any ideas, short of ripping out the problem cable and re-running it (about an hour job, because some of the places it goes through are pretty awkward to get to)?
