This evening I was reading up on Winnipeg's flood protection scheme, the better to evaluate protection schemes for Fargo.
Duff's Ditch has done a spectacular job of protecting Winnipeg from major flooding since it was completed in March 1968.
As I may have mentioned, the Red River Valley has all the topography of a tabletop, so when it floods here, a VERY LARGE AREA gets affected. For example, the Flood of 1997 that devastated Grand Forks was 25 miles across. Channeling such a monster into a non-destructive path is, to put it mildly, challenging.
Canadian hydrologists used the term "Red Sea" to refer to this phenomenon, a term I was unaware of until this evening. You learn something new every day. :)
