Getting back to normal

Apr 02, 2009 16:55

We are finally returning to something resembling normal activities. The businesses are reopening, the streets are filling with traffic, even the tap water is better.

Good.

Give us some time out of the limelight to melt the snow, clear the streets, and take down the temporary dikes. It certainly beats the alternative--ask greater Grand Forks how the summer of 1997 went.

That said, we'll be making some hard decisions about flood mitigation soon. The oxbows should be completely cleared of permanent structures, and the river given some breathing room. And then it's time to build dikes and walls high enough to ensure that the river stays in the resulting greenway. Part of that will entail either raising or removing bridges. And all of this will cost money, though that's a discussion for another day.
