Yesterday at 6pm we went to see Riley's pediatrician because he couldn't stop coughing. He wasn't wheezing too bad but with his history I was unsure. We did an atrovent+albuterol neb followed by another albertol neb and orapred in office to get things going and hopefully prevent him from getting hospitalized, but his doc did give me the choice of hospitalizing him or taking him home. I choose to take him home as he didn't look too bad compared to how he's been when he was hospitalized.
we had a rough night and after repeatedly waking up with asthma problems I decided to take him into the ER, I didn't think we'd be staying so I just went in pjs armed with a couple of books and his stuffed dino. After 2 combivent nebulizer treatments and him still wheezing some the dr knowing his history decided to keep him over night just to keep an eye on things. He looked pretty good, and the admitting Dr decided not to do an IV, but to give him round the clock albuterol. well he progressively got worse, until this morning he was having severe retractions and sating at 93 with full blast oxygen on, he was hardly moving any air. the dr was in our room practically all morning we ended up doing 2 epinephrine shots which seemed to have little effect, and then we did a lot of nebulizer + continuous albuterol and the doc drew arterial gases. His CO2 was at 50 and she said that with an asthma patient she'd like no more than 30. So she called down to Santa Clara pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) to see if they had any recommendations. They said to give some Terbutaline and then transfer him over. So we got to take an ambulance ride down to PICU and that's where we are now. He's doing much better, he was put on a drip of the terbutaline, while continuing the constant albuterol+oxygen. Now at 9pm since he is doing so well we are going to start weaning him down off the terbutaline. So it's been a crazy whirl wind day that's been quite scary at times and my poor baby is in th intensive care unit :(
but I think we will be going home in not too long as he's responding very well now.
I'll be doing a picture post later.
