Between her seemingly endless stream of homework, her rush to get to the post office before it closed yesterday, her continued research into post-traumatic stress disorder, and her obnoxious roommate, Lillian was determined to have a pleasant, relaxing Friday afternoon to herself. It seemed like an age had passed since she'd had an opportunity to curl up under her tree with a good book. It was one she had borrowed from Heather, The Dandelion Girl. She could use something sweet and romantic with a happy ending to take her mind off of, well, everything.

Lillian's steps faltered slightly when she saw someone was already there but she kept walking toward the tree. It was a big tree. As she drew closer, she recognized a familiar head of blond hair. It was difficult, if not impossible, to mistake Lawrence for anyone else ( ... )

Lawrence noticed Lily approaching with a book in her arms. Apparently, she had intended to read here again like she did every day he saw her. For once, Lawrence decided to take a different approach altogether in talking to someone. Maybe, just maybe, it would work... and he would end this conversation with a friend.

He smiled. It was hard for him to do so, but he hadn't wanted to make an enemy of Lily, nor did he have a reason to.

"Good afternoon, Lily," he responded while looking her book over. He paused a moment before continuing, "How are you this afternoon?"

Lillian stared at him a second, completely surprised by the question. Lawrence never asked her how he was. She was lucky if he even acknowledged her presence whenever she said hello. To say, she wasn't quite sure what to make of Lawrence's sudden attempt to be friendly.

It'd be best for you to not make anything of it, Nephele murmured, giving her what felt like a mental head pat. Just listen to what he has to say and answer his questions. No more, no less.

"Very tired," Lillian replied, honestly. "How about yourself?"

Lawrence wasn't sure if his attempt to be friendly had gone over too well... Lily had stared at him a long while before responding. He hoped, however, that she accepted it.

"Ah, I'm--" He stopped. What could he say here? He couldn't say he was doing well, because he wasn't. And he couldn't say he wasn't, because she'd probably ask why and he'd have to mention Lester. Or even worse, what happened Monday. And then she would hate him as much as Lester does. He had to come up with something, quick... something that wasn't a lie.

"I've been... better, I suppose," he stated quietly, "would you, erm, like to sit down? I know you're here often, so..." he felt himself trail off awkwardly. He didn't know what else to say after that.

New thread because it's pretty narrow! isolatedscholar July 30 2011, 02:11:04 UTC
Lawrence nearly choked when he heard what Lilly said. She didn't see anything about him that merited dislike? She didn't see any flaws that couldn't be forgiven ( ... )

"You're welcome..."

She had caught that last part. It made her blush even more. Her smile widened into a grin. She couldn't say she minded, not at all. It was certainly unexpected but this school year had been full of unexpected twists, hadn't it? She'd seen so many strange things and found herself at the center of a group of people she barely knew but had somehow grown to care for, just the same.

Hesitantly, Lillian reached over and gently rested her hand on top of Lawrence's. And just left it there, touching him lightly enough that he could pull his hand away if he wanted to. If there was a lesson she had learned in the course of the past few months, it was not to take time for granted. Each moment mattered.

Lawrence felt Lilly's hand resting on top of his and he didn't know how to respond... at first, he was horrified because he hated being touched. In fact, the thought of being touched by anyone made him shiver and filled him with dread. He always felt touch was one of the most personal form of communication known to man and, because of that, abhorred it greatly. It wasn't like he could participate in any sort of communication to begin with... he knew very well just how he got in social situations. But this situation with Lilly was certainly an exception. Lawrence had never in his life felt a torrent of feelings like he did right now.

His very first instinct was to pull back... in fact, that is what every fiber of his being was telling him to do. But he resisted it. He thought he could feel a gentle peck from Phoenix and heard something of a low squawk, but he couldn't quite make out what the bird was saying. It wasn't like he liked being touched, but... with Lilly, it felt a bit different than it would from someone else. It felt warm ( ... )

Lillian just sat there with a dopey grin on her face, not moving her hand. A feeling of warmth, not quite like anything she'd ever experienced before, filled her. She didn't feel so dark and empty at her core, just then.

Is this hope?, she wondered. If it was, maybe it wouldn't seem as fleeting this time. That'd be nice. She wondered what to do next. These were completely uncharted waters for her, after all.

"Um, what would you like to do now?" she asked shyly. "I'm free if you are."
