IT WAS A NICE DAY AND LAWRENCE WAS DESPERATELY TRYING TO AVOID GOING NEAR THE LIBRARY... )
It was weird to him... He had never heard anyone say that. Not even Heinrich had said that. Heinrich respected all of his flaws and treated him like the son he could never have.
For a moment, something like tears seemed to well up in his eyes and he laughed a bit, smiling at Lilly, trying very hard not to cry. Why had he even wanted to cry? Maybe it was just the fact that he had never expected to hear those words from anyone...
"Don't worry about me, Lillian," he said, with a smile, "I think that now..." his voice lowered and he could feel it cracking slightly, "...I have at least one very good friend..." and then a mutter, "...or maybe it's more than that..."
He looked down at the ground for a long while, wondering if Lillian had heard what he'd muttered. The feelings he'd felt slowly started to make sense. He actually cared about Lilly. No, it was more than just care... he was falling for her.
"Thank you..." He whispered.

She had caught that last part. It made her blush even more. Her smile widened into a grin. She couldn't say she minded, not at all. It was certainly unexpected but this school year had been full of unexpected twists, hadn't it? She'd seen so many strange things and found herself at the center of a group of people she barely knew but had somehow grown to care for, just the same.
Hesitantly, Lillian reached over and gently rested her hand on top of Lawrence's. And just left it there, touching him lightly enough that he could pull his hand away if he wanted to. If there was a lesson she had learned in the course of the past few months, it was not to take time for granted. Each moment mattered.

His very first instinct was to pull back... in fact, that is what every fiber of his being was telling him to do. But he resisted it. He thought he could feel a gentle peck from Phoenix and heard something of a low squawk, but he couldn't quite make out what the bird was saying. It wasn't like he liked being touched, but... with Lilly, it felt a bit different than it would from someone else. It felt warm and very kind.
He didn't even know what to say. Somehow, he just felt like words would spoil the moment, so he didn't say anything. He just looked at Lilly, and he wasn't even sure what expression was on his face. But he saw her smiling, no, she was grinning.
That was more than enough for him. He returned her grin with one of his own.

Is this hope?, she wondered. If it was, maybe it wouldn't seem as fleeting this time. That'd be nice. She wondered what to do next. These were completely uncharted waters for her, after all.
"Um, what would you like to do now?" she asked shyly. "I'm free if you are."

"Anything that you would like to do is just fine with me, Lillian." He said, with a smile. "Is there anywhere that you would like to go?"
He tried very hard to hide his desperation towards wanting to stay with Lilly. If he didn't, he'd just have to go back to his dorm room... back with Ezra... and he didn't want to do that after such a wonderful day.

The thought of going back to the dorms and letting Terri spoil her good mood was about as appealing as having a root canal done without anesthesia.

"That sounds wonderful, Lillian. Let's go." He smiled, standing up and offering her his hand.

"Yes, let's!"
