okay, shirley has no idea how it happened, but it did. because when she sat down next to him at the bar, it was most definitely to troll him as she does to everyone. and instead, she ended up liking him. which is not exactly a hard feat. her baseline emotions are, actually, positive and amiable because negativity is more effort than she has or cares to put in, anyway; so liking someone is easy, but at the same time, there are these ridiculous degrees of "like" she has. where it is the neutral, "you don't piss me off or cause trouble." and then, the "i don't mind when you bother me." and...so on

he totally reminds her of this dude named syuveil, who is the token geek among the merry band of WHAT THE HELL ARE WE DOING (aka saving the entire fucking world, nbd) she was a part of. syuveil, being the token geek ofc, was not the strongest fighter, and he is believed to have died before the final battle. this hit shirley hard because being incredibly dedicated to her duty as a healer, she feels she failed; and also because of that duty, she looked after him as a brother. he is very afraid of death, so she still feels sisterly about him, too, since she pities that.

...this is, basically, the basis of her affection for him. and why she tends to be more soothing on him than others. she would be okay if he bothered her for help or even a conversation, too.
