hilariously, ezio does not actually stand out in her mind very much as someone she would normally engage. mostly because of his, uh, flirtatious nature. because otherwise, someone who is very relaxed and has sort of a dry wit is right up her alley of "people she will do more than tolerate."

and the reason she has is because shirley has some vested interested in desmond that is growing, and look. she likes desmond's face, ok. BUT EZIO'S IS NICE, TOO; THE SCRUFF IS V APPEALING.

but then, it works because they get along well! like, shirley would be comfortable in silence with him. which isn't rare, really, but given her tendency to troll whoever the hell is in front of her, it means something. (she doesn't know what, LMF. shirley has kept her own self at such a distance that rediscovering interpersonal relationships is vague and a total mess. ...she doesn't care, atm, though. i mean, she's content. W/E, LET'S NOT RUIN THAT.) it is definitely in part because of desmond, let's be real.

BUT, ALSO, THIS NICE THING THAT. he isn't as annoyingly forward as other dudes have been, so shirley likes that she can actually steer where their flirting goes without have to use a newspaper.
and he is not annoyingly forward as other men have been. she...doesn't mind attention!! she just doesn't like when it's not in her control, which is why she is...so cruel to men that hit on her. ;A;

so anyway. go thank desmond, ezio, that a saucy ginger digs you. BUT IT'S COOL. SHE LIKES YOU FOR BEING YOU, TOO.

MOVING ON UP, TO THE EASTSIIIIIDE. wait -

so he isn't like, on desmond's or lavi's level of "how much shirley tolerates/likes you," but she does do more than tolerate him now. especially because HO HO HO SHE IS SEMI-AWARE OF HERSELF that to not would be a seriously bitch move after asking him to carry corpses. but anyway, his willingness to do it and utter respect about is what did it for real. like on the basis of his person!

she does feel bad about it! because death makes people upset and all, you know, and that's what distresses her about others' suffering. but he took it well enough, which she kind of expected but not because it was more "he can handle it eventually," so she is more interested in him. and considering making it up to him somehow, idk.

also, WHY SO MANLY. seriously impressed with his badassery.

so excited for their date. ho ho ho.

A MAN AFTER MIDNIGHT?? ...sorry, i couldn't...help myself. (code_okok)

okay, so. ezio is now one of her confusing relationships. FIRST OFF, she likes him, and it's that unconditional like that is v rare for her these days. she likes when he comes around, and she wants him around; ngl, she is going to start visiting him at his place (...one of...) now.

the reasons for which are probably obvious?? i mean, there is the "i don't bother you about the ghost thing," which is always ace to shirley. especially when he is like "YOU'RE INJURED, YOU SHOULD DO SOMETHING ABOUT THAT" because it's dumb to say to her, but it's still treating her like a person, even if in the limited scope of his higher understanding. and he is charming and intelligent and all these other lovely adjectives, ok. HE IS COMFORTABLE TO BE AROUND, AS I SAID BEFORE. plus, she thoroughly enjoys her brains being fucked out by him...

so they have comfortable silences, and the more they are around each other, the more shirley feels bound to him with a sort of camaraderie because they've both been through a lot, and they don't make hesitations for fighting, what they value, and fighting for said values. which is basically how ezio has no one for her to compare him to from her previous comrades! you know, shirley just started looking at him as his own person, without them and without desmond (which is easy, they are so different), and she likes the person that offers to be around her.

WHICH IS JUST THIS REALLY BIG INDICATOR OF HOW OUT OF TOUCH SHE HAS BEEN. and how isolated. and she is really starting to see that herself, so she has a lot of things to sort out. because LMF SURPRISE, shirley kept people at arms length before her death as well, but she still didn't have so many levels of her compassion toward others and used words like "friend" and "love" and so forth. and there is just a lot for her to think about now.

and she almost decided not to. because why the hell should she? shirley did her duty to her world, and she knew it would be a waiting game for a long time, and she simply has to wait more to go home to be with her comrades. even if the likely point of that is, well, nothing. literally. and she has spent thousands years shunning the idea of doing much outside maintaining what she died for, and that is ensuring the world stays in one piece because of jackass gods.

but she doesn't have to do that anymore because she directed rose and dart as needed, and the world is going to be set not right, but maybe, free. she doesn't really have anything to do now! she can just be, and she has no higher force or anything to account herself to except herself. and obviously, herself is okay with being a hypocrite about being human.

and when belzac's shadow stopped by, he had a lot of things to say to her that was a much needed verbal bitchsmack. and, at least, forced her to stop being in denial about a lot of feelings and thoughts. and after the abyssal war, where she felt together and alive and purposeful, she continued to keep what he said in mind, even if it was shaky. because that feeling was great, but shirley has about ten thousands years of numbness to shake off, and she is doing p damn well in the face of it.

but shit happens, and it sucks, and it shakes her back to that place. which is what dende's disappearance did.

well-timed or not, ezio being there is one of the best things that could have happened. BECAUSE LIKE I SAID, he is a grounding presence and not in the sense of how chill he is but the sense that he is an attachment and one that reminds her about life in a way that a shadow of the man you once loved (and still do in a way) can't. BASICALLY, JUST BEING THERE WAS A BEACON OF "THIS IS ALL WORTH IT, AND YOU KNOW IT, SO STOP TAKING THE EASY WAY."

so they have that.

it causes problems, though. because LET ME TAKE A MOMENT TO EXPLAIN WHY SHE HAD SEX WITH HIM. one, she was drunk, so there was enough wiggle room in decision making to say "why not." because two, she has about ten thousand years of not having sensation the same way as the living. which she doesn't necessarily regret but she does miss it. so she misses (good) sex. and three, it worked in his favor that ezio wasn't a total stranger. she wants to know who she is fucking! actually, she wants more than to just know them, so that is why the recent log is gonna cause problems. because here, ezio is! he's not a friend, and they are having sex (that is going to become regular), which could be casual and friendly, but that isn't how shirley rolls. if she is fucking you, she cares, and if she is fucking you more than once, she really cares. and she isn't so out of touch she doesn't realize the grounding he has done would be seen romantically under some other circumstances.

but she has no idea if she loves him. she knows she would completely destroy someone for him, but that isn't the same because shirley is insane and a merciless bitch, to boot. she knows she cares, though, and she knows he cares. but it's suddenly this confusing gray zone of "what do you mean to me!" and is among the things she has to think about.

so um, tl;dr: shirley has to decide between being above humanity or not, but ezio is a p good reminder that being human is cool.
