I love Peggy Lee like nobody's business, but god damn, the Siamese Cat Song. Epic fail, Peg.
I don't know that I can speak for every child's experience, but I remember golden-age-Disney's casual racism sailing over my head when I was a kid. Racism and drinking and smoking in animated movies didn't stay with me; I simply didn't regard what I was watching as real. It was like it didn't exist outside of the movie; back then I would watch the scene and think "I know some Asian people, and no one acts like this, so this isn't real." It took years and some education before I realized it was emblematic of something real and harmful and didn't have anything to do with actual Asian people at all.
I always hated Lady and the Tramp anyway. I think this was about when I started to hate babies. I remember watching that movie and going LOOK AT ALL THAT DOG DOES FOR YOU, HOW CAN YOU FAVOR THAT LITTLE THING YOU'VE ONLY KNOWN FOR LIKE A MONTH, IT DOESN'T EVEN DESERVE IT, IT JUST LIES THERE AND CRIES AND DOES NOTHING. And I hated those awful bitchy cats even before I knew they were racefail.
