To begin, I’m an idiot and I forgot to bring my memory stick with yesterday’s entry. I didn’t come because I had choir practice at 7:30, and I (Accos, actually) did wash yesterday, and I didn’t really want more of a sunburn than I had to have, walking here in the eternally hot sun. So there.
Today was a good day, and yesterday was too, although I promise to remember to bring my memory stick tomorrow so you can hear all about it. Like you are dying to know, haha. But..this morning I had to wake up extra early (6:30!!) so I could walk to the breadmarket because I realized last night that I was out of bread. And as you should know by now, bread and water is my morning diet, and every time I eat breakfast the song “Out of Range” by Ani DiFranco pops into my head. (If you don’t know why, you should, but I’ll tell you anyway: she says ‘I was locked into being my mother’s daughter, I was eating bread and water, thinking nothing ever changes…’)
Anyway. I overslept and woke up close to 7:00, and managed to get bread, eat it, take my pills, wash my face, brush my teeth, dress, and walk to Odette’s in about 45 minutes. Which is totally impressive. So we went to church early, because her choir was leading the service today, and it was good. I like church a lot..except today I didn’t think about the fact that you have to kneel (on no more than two-by-fours, mind you, and it’s terribly painful) and put your arms over the pew in front. And I have to disclose now that I have really wonderfully hairy armpits because I haven’t shaved since I’ve been here, and I wore a tank top to church, and well..I was slightly embarrassed to show my lovely hair (because it grows straight, and theirs grows curly and close to the skin and so you can’t really see it that much), and so I had to be careful, haha. But it was good anyway. They sang a bunch of songs out of the hymnal, and some I followed, and some I didn’t. We didn’t sing the two songs I learned Wednesday night, so that was a bummer. But it was still good, and after church there were lots of people on the adjacent stoop selling things to eat, and so I bought two small balls of cassava doughnuts, which are really tasty balls of fried cassava dough. Then I bought corn on the way to my house after parting with Odette (corn-on-the-cob, I guess you could say, except not as yellow as straight boiled corn) and ate those for lunch too. I took a nap for about an hour, because we had a meeting at 3, and before I went to the meeting I made an enormous pot of soup (out of a packet-the best kind) and ate it. All. I ate so much today, haha, and all carbs at that. But it’s okay because I’m totally getting skinner, and I don’t care at any rate.
So..sat through the atrociously long and hot meeting, where really it was just the officers arguing about how to conduct the meeting, where I finally said that I had done SGA for several years and that when approving the minutes of a previous meeting, you should read them, ask for changes, move to approve them, second the motion, and then vote on them. Everyone was like, vote on them? really? But whatever..at least it put a stop to that nonsense. I got done with that around 5, read until about 6, and came here and had an enormous bottle of beer that I couldn’t possibly finish by myself. And so I’m here, and no motorcycle ride this weekend, and no health farm, but it was a good weekend anyhow, and busy. And I had a nap, which was lovely except that I drooled from my mouth all the way to behind my ear, hahahaha...and I know that you wanted to know that.
Okay..so..Not much more here. This week is going to be crazy busy!! Tomorrow..well, nothing. But a visit to the health post and a class on Tuesday, and then Wednesday in Accra, and then Thursday leaving for the waterfall town (I’ve already forgotten the name) to do my women’s health workshop there for the entire weekend. So..I should be back tomorrow and probably Tuesday, but no updates are guaranteed from Wednesday till Sunday. At least all you religious readers will have a rest, eh? Haha..love you all bunches and hope you are having a good time.
