Day 03 - Your favorite new show (aired this TV season)

Looking back at the last twelve months, I have to state that we had a great year of television. I found a lot of shows to love and only a few of them got canceled. So, which one was my favorite? The shortest one of all, actually: Misfits.

For those of you who don't have a clue what it's about, Misfits deals with five juvenile delinquents who get caught in a freak lightning storm and develop superpowers. It's been described as "Skins meets Heroes" which actually is a pretty apt description, but only scratches the surface of what makes this show so great. Right now, there's nothing on television like it.

Storywise, it's the culmination of three devices - it's got an on-going storyline concerning a murder that happens in the first episode, plus the romantic and sexual entanglements of some of the characters, of course. It's also a freak-of-the-week show, every episode we meet a new character with a superpower thanks to the lightning storm (not all of those freaks are villains though). And then the show also uses the same trick as Skins and tells every episode from a different character's point of view, allowing us to better connect with said character.

And those characters are the best thing about Misfits. The term might be over-used, but in this case it totally fits: They're all anti-heroes. Seriously, after the pilot you're not even sure if you're supposed to like these people. These are not superheroes, not even deeply flawed humans with powers, no, they're just jerks and creeps with superpowers. But by the end of its way too short first season, you love them all and really care about their well-being, thanks to good writing and the equally great cast.

I guess I should also mention the look of the show. It's both gritty and pretty and the editing is jumpy when it needs to be, nicely covering up the shoe-string budget it must have been filmed on. The streets are deserted, the sky's always grey and all the colors are washed out. It's a dreary world with curse words and quite graphic sex, more DC than Marvel, but the show and its characters with their unusual powers and attitude problems are oh so entertaining.

And for once, the critics agreed with me: Misfits just won the BAFTA for "Best Drama Series".

Boyfriend's choice: Modern Family, this year's best new comedy.
