Day 02 - A show that you wish more people were watching

Jul 03, 2010 13:04

Three shows immediately came to my mind. One of them is Greek. Seriously, watch it, you'll love it. I will talk about the second one on day 10, so today my vote goes to My Boys.

Okay, raise your hand if you've even heard about the show. Really? No one? Even though the fourth (and probably final) season is starting this month?

On paper, My Boys is nothing new, it's one of those "single friends in the city"-sitcoms that seem to pop up by the dozen every year. This one is a bit different though: First, it's a single-camera show. It's also not set in New York. Not even in Los Angeles. It's set in Chicago and - according to people who live there - that's really noticeable, cause it accurately uses the places known to the citizens just like It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia does (another show for this category, now that I think of it). But most important of all, the group dynamic is completely different to the standard Friends clones.

My Boys is about a woman named PJ who works as a sports reporter and doesn't care for the stereotypical Sex and the City-girl stuff. No, she loves watching sports, playing poker, drinking beer... well, all the stuff that's usually called "guy stuff" on TV. Think of her as a more tomboyish, but cuter version of Robin from How I Met Your Mother. She's got one female friend who constantly tries to get her to be more girly, but PJ prefers to just hang out with "her boys" - her brother, her ex-roommate, two other male friends and another (rival) sports writer who's kind of her love interest.

This core group is what's great about the show, you really get the feeling they're all long-time friends and it's much more believable than the usual three-or-two-girls-with-three-or-two-boys-ratio. PJ is also one of the best female characters I've seen in a sitcom, she's the kind of woman you wanna hang out with, not stereotypically femme, but still a girl and not just a guy with boobs like the strong-woman-cliche normally dictates. And the guys are diverse and pretty much normal-looking, there's someone to identify with for everybody.

In the end, the show is just real pleasant to watch, it's a nice half-hour to spend with some fun people. Just don't mind all the baseball metaphors PJ's voice-over is over-using in the first season.

Boyfriend's choice: Nurse Jackie - also a very great underrated show.
