Good Day For It

And today "it" was a quiet solo paddle. I revisited a place the wife and I had been to earlier in the year and enjoyed powerful quiet, and calm water. The sun was warm on my face and I am so glad I was able to be outside today. With winter coming on, I find myself cherishing these days of warmth and brightness and doing everything I can to make the most of them.

Paddling by myself - the easy repetition of movement, the quiet and the peace - all cause it to be a sort of meditative act for me. I realized today that the progress I made across the water had little to do with the individual details of each stroke... in fact, the more I paid attention to how hard I was pulling, how deep I was dipping, or the angle of my stroke, the harder it was for me to keep a straight course. If I simply set my sight on where I was going, my arms and shoulders - my whole body - made all those minute adjustments to keep me tracking right along where I should be. A little lesson for me, perhaps, to not loose track of the big picture ... to loosen my sometimes tenacious grip on every detail of a thing and give some of that focus to where the heck I am going!
