Characters: Kairi, Axel, anyone else?
Setting: East Gallery, Stairs to Nothing.
Time: Late Night 009.
Summary: Kairi sees the ceiling -- or rather, Destiny Islands. And she meets an old 'friend.'
Warnings: Angst and a lengthy OP. Oops. D:

Kairi stood in the middle of the gallery, without really realizing it was a gallery. Her attention was rather drawn towards the ceiling. Earlier that the night, it had been a swirling mass of clouds, chiming with different songs that were familiar to her - the songs of the islands. There was the calm lulling of waves crashing on the sand, the gentle hum of birds. And there were voices, too; indistinct but still recognizable. The happy voices of her friends, perhaps racing on the beach back home.

Home. Kairi had to blink her violet-tinged eyes twice to check if she was seeing things correctly. Up above was the vast blue sky of Destiny Islands during daytime, with a few healthy white cumulus clouds scattered across the heavens. But more importantly, there was their favourite hang-out spot, the paopu tree, on the small island off shore. And there she was - her, Kairi, the Princess of Heart.

But this Kairi looked happy, happier than this Kairi ever was since she'd been trapped in this house. This Kairi's pink dress was immaculate, and hers was stained with the blood of Itachi that had just finished drying to a dull brown crust. This Kairi also did not have dried blood around her mouth, cheeks, and in her tangled crimson hair.

This Kairi had her friends at her side, just like the old days. Riku - oh, how her heart ached to see him again, to see if he was doing well - was leaning against the curved trunk of the tree, and Sora (the one who had left, maybe?) sitting at her other side. They all had what looked like light blue popsicles, but nothing like she'd ever seen before, and were licking them contentedly.

'Hey, you think we can skip school tomorrow?'

'Sora! Why would you want to do that?' The Kairi responded, whacking him on the back of his spiky head playfully.

'The only thing Sora didn't miss while he was out saving the worlds was school,' Riku drawled slyly, giving the two a glance with a small smirk tugging at his lips.

'Don't tell me you didn't miss it, either!' The redhead accused.

Riku shrugged, looking off to the side. 'It wasn't at the top of my list.'

'Ahh, this sea-salt ice cream is excellent. I wish every day could be like this.' Sora stretched back, nibbling on the bar of ice cream.

It was them, all right. They were like she had always known them. Even she was just like herself. Kairi looked around determinedly, spotting a staircase off to the back of the room. She had to get a better look. She had to - she had to go back. Maybe this was the way of getting out. Maybe it wasn't about opening the door to the outside. Maybe this was the answer.

She began to run towards the stairs, darting up, taking two steps at a time. If she could only reach the ceiling . . .

There! The ceiling, the picturesque scenery of Destiny Islands, was getting closer. It nearly reached her head when she raised her arm to touch it. She could think of no repercussions at the moment; she just wanted to go home. To be with her friends again.

Her hand, instead of feeling the balmy tropical air of Destiny Islands, hit something solid. The image rippled, and for a second, her friends' faces were distorted, their voices fading in and out.

Kairi withdrew her hand slowly. What had she been expecting? For it to go through? For her to suddenly appear back home, just like she had suddenly appeared here? It was just an illusion, after all. Just a trick the house was playing on her. Fake.

Hopeless.

Her knees buckled beneath her, and she slowly sank down onto one of the top steps. She felt an even greater disappointment sweep over her than the one that had a few days before, when she tried to open the entrance door with her keyblade. Her hands balled into fists at her sides.

"It isn't fair," She muttered. Then it gained strength. "This isn't fair! You aren't fair!" She seethed, staring up at the ceiling, a fire in her eyes. This house wasn't fair. Nothing was fair. Life wasn't fair, simple as that.

"I hate it here!"

The girl dug her hands into her hair, like claws, her elbows digging into her knees. The frustrated scream echoed throughout the marble room below, greeted by the ceiling illusion.

'Don't you just love it here? We're all back home on the islands, and it's like I never wanted to leave in the first place.' Kairi spoke.

'It was my idea. I regret it now.' Riku said.

''S'ok, Riku. We can stay here, now. Forever.' Sora said.

'Promise?' Kairi teased, although she knew she was quite serious.

'Promise.'
