Hikaru awoke to the booming sound of a gunshot.
His eyes flew open, amber and liquid from lack of sleep. Although he was no longer sleeping, he did not feel entirely alert. It took him several moments to figure out just what was happening.
He was staring into his brother's eyes, identically golden, like a cat's. If you looked at them closely, you would determine that they were nearly copper, like two brand new, shiny pennies. And Kaoru's began to look exactly like that, because pennies were not alive, and they were beginning to fade like they did over the years, oxidizing as the life was slipping out of him.
He could feel him lose his balance, lose all support and control, falling into him. He felt a certain, foreboding heaviness in his hand, pressing against his brother's chest - a gun. A pistol, to be exact, but Hikaru didn't know shit about weapons. He didn't even know how to shoot one, but apparently he had. He had shot his brother.
"Brother . . . help me."
The strangled whimper came from Kaoru's mouth, contorted with pain. Hikaru's own mouth was hanging open, making no sound, ruptured from shock. All he could hear inside his head was No, nonononono no no no no no no no no-
He held his twin close, finally able to choke out some sound - a small cry like a wailing kitten. There was so much weight - he hadn't realized how heavy his brother was when he was just dead weight. A bag of meat and bones - that's all it came down to, didn't it? His blood was a hot rush against his clothes, soaking into them, pressing into his skin.
"Oh God . . . Kaoru, I'm so . . . sorry . . ."
How did this happen? How did this happen? He demanded a reason. He needed an explanation.
Hikaru dropped the gun, for it was far too much of a burden, and slowly knelt, laying his brother down on the stone ground. He leaned over him, weeping. Everything was shaky - his vision, his arms, even his heart.
"Goddamnit . . ." He breathed, his voice a whine, his eyes watery and leaking tears that splashed helplessly onto his brother's pallid face.
"Hi . . . kar . . . u," Kaoru managed, sucking in a pained breath. His body convulsed once, and then was still again.
"Don't leave me, please. Don't leave me!" He had no idea where he was getting the energy to scream, but scream he did. He held onto the boy's slender shoulders, a perfect match, and bit down on his own lower lip, hard, still sobbing.
"Love . . . you," His twin, his life, whispered. The corners of his lips twitched briefly into a faint, dying smile, and then relaxed again. It was a smile of reassurance, knowing Kaoru. He was telling him that everything would be okay. But it wouldn't. Blood bubbled at the corners of his mouth.
Then, his eyes died.
Kaoru, now gone from this world (forever), stared up lifelessly at his brother who cursed life.
"No . . . noooooo . . ." The boy moaned, pressing his forehead against his dead brother's and sucking in liquid breath that stabbed at his lungs each time.
He was so alone.
