Saffron Skies - by Lesley Lokko

A fab book, it tells the tale of 3 friends Amber, Becky, and Madelaine, from childhood to adulthood; it also follows the complex relationships in Amber's family, with a very successful father (Max) who has a drunk for a wife and a mistress by whom he has another child Paola (ie Amber's halfsister). We see the rivalries between this extended family and how this impacts on their lives too. Much of the tale is set in Africa - Bamako & Zimbabwe; the writer was brought up in Ghana so her descriptions and knowledge of that part of the world are realistic and make it very interesting to read.

The above description is really rather simplisitc, the book is far more than that, but I don't want to give away the plot, suffice to say, for anyone who likes a good long read with many twists pick this book up and you'll get drawn in.

This is the first i've read by her, and i'm impressed
