Tonight, Jim and I made our way up to Playhouse in the Park. They were hosting the annual Sachs Award. It's given out every year to someone who promotes the arts culture of the city in amazing and interesting ways. This year's recipient was Stephen Sondheim, for not only writing the very popular "Company" that's now on Broadway, but for the various achievements he has made in the theatre world at large over the years.

Yes, Mr. Sondheim was there...

Yes, I got to meet him...

Yes, I shook his hand... :-)

There's an amazing calm about him. He was called a "creative genius" by the Fine Arts Fund, yet he seemed surprisingly down-to-earth and almost small. During the pre-awards get-together, he stayed in a corner near the stairs and let people come to here. He listened as Jim told him about a class he took in NY that did an all Sondheim review, and responded. I just stood there in awe and reflection. I really didn't have much to say to him and felt that if I tried, I would have bumbled and stumbled and made of fool of myself. I just watched him, taking in the quiet genius.

The ceremony was very lovely with a mini video documentary and Pamela Myers, one of the first CCM grads and the original Marta in Company, delighting the large crowd with songs and stories. It was very nice. Stephen (I just called him Stephen *^_^*) did not say much in receiving the award, but what he said was lovely. He kept it short, sweet and meaningful...

Not a bad way to spend a Monday evening :-)
