The first day at the new studio, Jongin feels familiar nerves. A pang of worry - about who the other kids are, and how good are they, and will he match up. But mostly, his limbs and joints itch with an energy and there is already a bounce in his step when he hears music coming from one room. He signs in and he is ushered to his class. There are a couple of other guys there, bags unzipped and stretching along one wall. But at the further side of the wall, there is a teacher, and a girl on pointe. They look like they are winding down after a session, and Jongin’s attention is drawn away when more students come in and someone offers a hand and introduces themselves. Moments later, when Jongin is swept away by the beginning of his class, he sees that ballerina in the black leotard slip out, glass door swinging in her wake.

Jongin misses his cue to introduce himself entirely and the Chinese kid in the class chuckles.

She’s back again, before his class the next week, and this time she is on the floor, stretching out as she finishes up. Jongin closes the door behind him louder than he intended, and she turns her head to look at him. She looks away less than a second later, back in her own world.

The next week, Jongin arrives earlier and loiters outside the class door of the classroom. It’s a small class of three girls, and she is one of them. She’s the furtherest away from him, in black again. The way she moves is spectacular. He’s standing there, frozen, gym bag cutting into his shoulder, eyes following this girl step and leap and twirl like nothing he’s ever seen before. She stops suddenly, and her eyes pierce through that glass, and meet his.

Jongin stands aside as she leaves, and she doesn’t look back at him. He doesn’t perform to his best. His teacher says his mind is on other things.

How true that is.

Jongin is like this for the rest of the term. He does well in class, and the teachers praise him, and he makes friends with all the other boys, but always, he comes early so he can catch a glimpse of that girl. Sehun asks him what’s going on, why is he always early, and Jongin just says he likes being punctual.

You’re a liar, Jongin. You’re never early for extra practice and you’re always coming to science class late.

Jongin waves Sehun away as he zips up his gear.

Repeat.
