There are many words one could use to describe a one-sided love. For many people, it brings as much happiness as it causes pain. She’s had some friends borrowing her shoulder to cry on after seeing their crushes with someone else. Some even swore they would never love another, though she personally thinks it’s impossible not to. Some ended it well, like Donghae who attended Yoona’s wedding with a genuine smile on his face. Some others continue to harbor a little hope in their heart, in case that person turns around one day.

For Sooyoung, she just wants to be thankful for it.

She may not be able to see through her eyes, but she is not blind to emotions. She is especially not blind to Changmin’s. She knows his heart when he tries to comfort her after Kyuhyun throws insults her way, afraid that she’d get offended though they all know he means none of them. She knows his heart when he accompanies her all the way to her home, even though his own house is on the other side of the town. On some days, she can even feel Changmin’s eyes on her, burning a minuscule hole into her skull.

“Are you thinking about what to eat for lunch?” A distinct voice interrupts her thoughts. She immediately feels her face heating up from the closeness of Kyuhyun’s lips from her ear when he leaned in to whisper to her. She tries to breathe normally, hoping that it would help preventing her face from turning red, if it hasn’t already.

“I’m not!” Sooyoung retorts. “I was thinking about something else.”

“What else could you be thinking about if it’s not food?”

She fights the urge to reach out and stab the male sitting next to her with her pen. But then she senses some silent movements in the air.

“Did Changmin say something?”

“Yeah, he asked how can such a pig like you can maintain your body despite the amount of food you inhale every day.”

She rolls her eyes and soon she hears a distinctive sound of something flat but sturdy (a ruler?) slapping onto an arm, so she chuckles. “Changmin will never say things like that.”

As soon as she says that, she feels his eyes on her. Changmin’s. Her breath hitches and she starts coughing. A hand immediately flies to her back, patting her gently. It’s warm and big, so she instantly knows it’s Changmin. She edges away uncomfortably and tries to crack a smile.

“Are you okay?” Kyuhyun’s concerned voice asks.

“I’m fine,” she answers quickly.

“Seriously, Soo. Don’t die on us, at least not this soon. Who will I tease if you’re not around?”

She rolls her eyes for the second time, though she senses Changmin is still staring at her. “Didn’t you live just fine before I came into your life? You’ll be fine. Maybe you’d feel bad for the rest of your life, but you’ll be just fine.” A part of me wishes you won’t. But she doesn’t say that out loud for Changmin’s sake, and maybe for hers as well.

Why must love be so complicated?

Changmin is not stupid, and he is especially not blind. He knows love when he sees it. That is why, he can tell in a heartbeat it is love he sees in Kyuhyun’s eyes whenever he looks at Sooyoung.

Kyuhyun is rough around the edges, but has the kindest heart. He probably would deny it if asked, but he does care about Sooyoung a lot. When they’re having a meal together, for example, Changmin never misses the way Kyuhyun would silently refill her glass and sometimes even gives up his own side dishes when she runs out of them. Occasionally, Changmin would also catch him staring at her with a soft smile across his face.

Sometimes, Changmin wishes he could give up his sight for her so she could see it herself.

Due to his inability to express his feelings well, Kyuhyun opts to instead show his affections towards Sooyoung by constantly getting on her nerves. He insults and picks on Sooyoung on regular basis. They all know he means none of them, yet Changmin still feels the need to tell him to stop in case she gets hurt. Changmin used to think it’s the wrong way to confess to someone you love. He, however, is the wrong one.

He sees the way Sooyoung opens up more and a lot easily to Kyuhyun compared to him. With Kyuhyun around, she doesn’t mind laughing out loud that there are times she tears up doing so, using harsher words that signify her being comfortable, and eating as much food as she pleases regardless of the number of times Kyuhyun has insulted her. She can be herself around him, but not Changmin, whom she feels the need to restrict her actions more.

Every so often, Changmin wonders if witnessing public display of affections could be more painful than watching his two friends bickering every single day and knowing that he can never be a part of it.

(“but love is never complicated, kyuhyun-ssi. we are the ones who complicate it”)
