Took a walk today, for exercise if nothing else. There's a minipark down on Andrews Place that showed up as a noticeable patch of public land in the middle of residential territory on the local council's land-use map of the suburb, but despite having grown up within a couple of blocks of it, I'd never heard of the place.
So I wandered down and had a bit of a look. It's small, sure, but quite nice, with a little playground climbing thingy for the kids and native bushes and whatnot placed to make the place seem bigger than it is.
The little road curling around to the park is interesting in its own right. It's completely contained within a standard suburban street grid block, and along with the park makes three sides of a logarithmic spiral, such that the satellite view makes the block look like a squared-off snail shell.
There are no footpaths on that road. Walk on the roadway or someone's lawn. I guess it's part of gently discouraging visitors - the actual houses and gardens are quite nice, although not of the overly ostentatious variety seen elsewhere.
As befits a city in the middle of a boom, there is a lot of building going on. In only ten minutes of strolling, I saw at least two houses being actively constructed, with the builders already heavily tanned by the Australian summer. Unsurprising - this degree of sunlight is such that even I, an indoor type more acquainted with a computer screen than open sky, am starting to darken from my usual geeky pallor. Now all I need is twenty kilos of muscle and a surfboard to complete the local beachgoing stereotype :)
