I made fairly extensive use of the subfigure package in my thesis. It's pretty self explanatory, it allows subfigures to be created within figures.
It seems subfigure is deprecated. It's been replaced by subfig. For what I was doing, it's a simple as replacing \subfigure with \subfloat. However, there are lots of possible extensions, such as ( Read more... )

TeXnicCenter looks like a viable GPL replacement for WinEdt under windows.

I'm also moderately enamoured with using SVN to do versioning of LaTeX projects. I just wish I'd discovered this love 18 months ago.

It's not unusual for journals to require figures and tables be placed at the end of the document. When I'm writing, I'd generally rather they're in the middle. A simple way to force them to the end after the fact is to set the maximum number of inline figures to 0 in the preamble.
\setcounter{totalnumber}{0}

I've tried a number of different solutions for creating diagrams for us in a LaTeX document (specifically my thesis).

• First I used Xfig and exported to latex picture code.
• I tried Dia, exporting to pstricks latex code, but found that the results didn't display properly. Going Dia->Xfig->latex did work, but was a bit of a pain, and required some ( Read more... )

\multirow is very handy if you have one cell in a table which needs to be centred across a number of rows. It's much easier to describe by exampleThe thing not many people mention is what to do if you want two (or more) cells (all in the same column) to be centred in this manner. Regex to the rescue. I don't use regular expressions too often, so I'm leaving this entry for myself as an example for future reference.

To change every instance of \calU^{*} to \calU^{(*)},

find: \\calU\^\{\(0*\)\}
replace: \\calU\^\{(\0)\}

It'd be hard pressed for that to have been much easier.
