Flowers and Dog Treats!

Hello again!  I’ve been cooking!  And I found a lovely, gluten free, chicken liver based, dog cookie recipe on Kol’s Notes -- A Baking. Crafting. Cleaning and Dog Friendly Lifestyle Bog for the DIY Enthusiast. What a fascinating title.  I’ll have to browse the rest of his pages soon!

I did have to monkey a bit with the ingredients, since I didn’t have quite that much GF flour left ... and I love doing that, even though it often goes astray.   This time, however, it seemed to work out well -- with no explosions, or batter splattered all over me and the kitchen walls (That was the other day).  But being only a hobby baker, I include. with my version, the original in the link above.   Besides, with a title like that, how can you not want to see the original site?

But before that -- lookie!!  My Christmas Cactus is really, really happy right now.

Lookit all those flower buds!  Nearly every stem has a flour bud on the end.  I’m just boggled!  And can’t wait to see them bloom.  I’m not sure what I did right, but I know I let it get pretty dry this summer.  Then I watered it really good recently, and boom -- many flowers.

Now, my slightly modified GF Chicken Liver Cookies.  Our dogs seem to think they’re fabulous -- the cat even liked the raw dough enough to eat 2 rounded tablespoons.  I almost wonder if it’d make a decent cat food.  But aw well, it’s all cooked now.

Set oven at 300F, and grease 2 large cookie sheets

In bowl, add:

1 20oz container of chicken livers, with juice. (Walmart sells them for about $1.70 a container, as I write this.)
2 eggs
1/2 cup cottage cheese (added because we had a giant container of the stuff, and we’re not using it up fast enough.  Plus, cheese.  Doggies always love cheese.)

Blend this up with one of those immersion blenders.  You can also use a regular blender, but ew, what a mess that’d be to clean up.  Immersion Blenders are so much easier to work with.

In sperate bowl combine:

1 cup GF flour
1 pinch garlic powder (sadly, I had none, so I had to omit)
1 cup uncooked oatmeal

Mix with spoon into Wet Mix.  Now, is where it gets weird and tricky.  Add 1/2 cup of coconut flour.  Mix it in good, and see what it looks like.  Coconut flour can absorb way more moisture than regular flours, so don’t add too much too soon.  Give it a minute.  If it looks to wet too roll into balls, add about 1/4 more, stir in, and add more ONLY if you need it.

Yes, this is how I cook.  And probably why, half the time, my recipes go haywire.  And also why I prefer cooking for the puppies.  They’re very forgiving, as long as cheese, peanut butter, or meat is involved.

Okay, spoon rounded, tablespoons of dough onto a greased cookie sheet about a half to an inch apart.  They don’t spread, so don’t worry about it.  Press down lightly -- wet hands work better, cuz it’s sticky.   And BAKE for 35-40 minutes.  Cool for about 10, and pop off the tray.  Right into waiting doggie mouths.

Expect your doggies to pester you all night, til they’re gone.  It’s the price of making doggie cookies.  Sorry.

Have a great night,
Teresa
