Water saving

It occurred to me the other day that with the current state of Melbournes water supply that perhaps there was something more I could be doing.

My parents (in East Gippsland) are currently doing what my Nan has been doing from the earliest time i can remember. They have a hose connection to the washing machine and drain the used water from the machine onto the lawn. Now they have strips of green and gold lawn (very asussie of them) but at least it keeps the lawn going.

This is just one way people out there can reduce water usage. But i also feel that there is so little being done to educate people on ways to make water count - especially for people like myself who live in a flat. So one morning last week over a a coffee i brainstormed a couple of ideas - which i have started to implement.

1. Getting a water reducing shower head. I have a teraditional shower head which i know uses too much water. I'm going to be getting myself a more efficient one.

2. Catch shower water & washing machine water. I currently have a shower over bath. By plugging the bath i can catch the shower water and re use it. We have communal gardens here, so i either cart the collected water via bucket downstairs and water the garden, or use it to flush the toilet. You cannot use it all the time in the toilet, but it definantly reduce the amount of cistern flushing you need to do.

3. My brewing. I realise i use a bit of water cleaning and sterlaising my equipemnt. I would love to know if Napisan (what i clean bottles with) is gaarden friend along with Idophor (an iodine solution i use to sterlise with). Items sterlised with idophor do not need to be rinsed so that helps, but there must be other ways.

Besides that, I am already preety water aware. I always turn the tap of between risinsing my toothbrush. I hand wash my dishes now. I drink beer rather than tap water ;) I rarely wash my car. If anyone out there knows of anything else I can be doing, please drop us a line.

Hope everyone had a safe time of the year, and have a good new one.
