This whole week has been a total wash. Sandy came and went, and really the only way you could even tell anything had happened up in here in Harlem has been the abundance of people off of work. It's kind of staggering to believe that just 110 blocks south of here, it's a federal disaster area with no power and flooding. That's SO FUCKING WEIRD.
I gave my information to nyc.gov when they were looking for volunteers, but so far I've heard nothing. During the hurricane my roommates and I sat around watching Family Guy, occasionally poking out heads out the window, taking in the storm. I went up to the roof at one point and took some pictures. The day after I got the flat tire on my bike fixed and went out to survey the damage. The Hudson River greenway was soaked with sludge. I managed to bike down as far as the 79th Street Boat Basin, but then the area was taped off and monitored by city officials. Seemed like everybody was out that day, just gawking at all the fallen trees. The city had taped off the parks but that didn't stop anybody.
Made it down to Columbus Circle, saw the CNN sign mangled, the dangling luxury crane, Central Park underwater. I felt like a bad person, snapping shots of all the lite-disaster porn. It was a really good day for bike riding.
I dunno when work's gonna pick up again. I was hoping tomorrow, but I still haven't heard anything. A whole week of work, lost. Meanwhile, I finally bit the bullet and got a week-long membership at another gym while mine was closed. $35 for a week. But at least I've got that to do, rather than just flopping around the apartment with my roommates.
You just watch these images on the TV and it's hard to beieve that they're so close. And soon everything will all be back to normal like Sandy never happened. New York goes back to work.
