Sometimes she thought it might be easier to just stuff herself in a suitcase and call herself 'checked luggage'. Certainly it would save her from the inevitable long lines and almost customary screaming child who refused to be consoled with toys, food, or blatant bribery. But Nora, long-time veteran of various and sundry airports, and the vagaries of travel, had come prepared. Possibly even "armed," if she could call it that. Putting in her headphones, she turned up the volume on her "busy place" playlist, which played soothing music, and dove into her latest mystery with glee, occasionally looking up to make sure she didn't miss anything. And when the sobbing four-year-old on the other side of the empty chair between them all but hurled himself at her in an effort to get away from his inattentive mother, Nora had put her book down and her arms out in quick, well-used reflex, catching him soundly and plopping him into her lap with a coo. A look to his mother had confirmed (with an eyeroll Nora couldn't suppress) that the woman was too engrossed in something on her 'phone to care, so to placate the little one and give everyone else's ears a rest, she whipped out her own 'phone and scrolled up the pictures from the infamous African safari, rhinos and all. Ten minutes and several pictures of "effalunts" and "lons" later, he was quietly curled into her, spent from crying and very obviously in need of lunch and a nap. His mother, spared from a small, righteously indignant lecture (really, Nora could have been anybody, and what was she thinking, sitting there and texting away without a care, as if she were the paid help?), looked up long enough to distractedly thank Nora and swoop him up to board their 'plane (thankfully not hers, but one gate over). Wishing devoutly that some people should be persuaded not to spawn, she got up as her own boarding line was called, and started down the loading hangar.

The trip had been uneventful, the layover quick, and she'd even managed a quick cat-nap somewhere over the Midwest. Possibly she could make it an early night, depending on what the boys would be up to, and if they were even home tonight. Rachel, at least, would be there, which would give her time to get caught up on all of her sister's doings. And how the wedding planning was going, after one postponement already. As they descended to the tarmac, Nora began collecting up her things, wondering which of her parents would be meeting her. It'd be good to see them again; it'd been since Pesach. And this would probably be the only quiet time she'd get before the return trip home.

Nora grinned as the wheels hit the runway. She couldn't wait.
